Emphasis Mark
The emphasis mark, emphasis dot, or is a typographic mark used in some East Asian languages to indicate emphasis. The markings can take many forms, such as dots or bullets, circles, or triangles. They were more commonly used historically, but with the rise of modern technology, it is now common to use quotation marks or change the font style. Chinese In China and Hong Kong, the emphasis mark () is used in textbooks and teaching materials. It is centred under each character highlighted in the horizontal texts, and centred to the right of each character in the vertical texts. Japanese In Japan, the emphasis mark ( ' or ') is usually a dot or a sesame dot and is centred above each character in the horizontal texts and to the right of each character in the vertical texts. It is not unusual for ''kenten'' and ruby to concur on the same side of the main text (usually above or to the right), but this feature has not been possible with CSS. World Wide Web Consortium
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web. Founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee, the consortium is made up of member organizations that maintain full-time staff working together in the development of standards for the World Wide Web. W3C has 350 members. The organization has been led by CEO Seth Dobbs since October 2023. W3C also engages in education and outreach, develops software and serves as an open forum for discussion about the Web. For the Korean language, South Korea mainly uses a combination of East Asian and European punctuation, while North Korea uses more of the East Asian punctuation style. Traditional punctuation In the traditional Korean system of writing, which was largely based on the Chinese writing system, punctuation was primarily used to make corrections or to help with the understanding of hanja, or Chinese characters. Some of the corrective punctuation marks included ⟨◦⟩ called 끼움표 (''kki-umpyo''), which was used for inserting, and ⟨▯⟩ called 삭제부 (''sakjebu'') which was used for deleting. Ruby Character
Ruby characters or rubi characters () are small, annotative glosses that are usually placed above or to the right of logographic characters of languages in the East Asian cultural sphere, such as Chinese ''hanzi'', Japanese ''kanji'', and Korean ''hanja'', to show the logographs' pronunciation; these were formerly also used for Vietnamese ''chữ Hán'' and ''chữ Nôm'', and may still occasionally be seen in that context when reading archaic texts. Japanese Punctuation
