Demi-soloist
Demi-soloist can have one of two meanings in the ballet. The first is for a solo rôle normally danced by a member of the ''corps de ballet''. Such rôles are often made in pairs, that is, two corps dancers, dance together, frequently in mirror image. Such dances are most commonly created for a pair of ballerinas but are occasionally made on (two or more) ''danseurs''. Yet more rare are ballets with dances for one, two or more demi-soloist couples. At a gala or other deluxe performance a company's soloists or principal dancers might dance ''demi'' rôles. The second meaning of demi-soloist is that of a rank in a ballet company, the English equivalent being second soloist. Corps De Ballet
In ballet, the ''corps de ballet'' (; French for "body of the ballet") is the group of dancers who are not principal dancers or soloists. They are a permanent part of the ballet company and often work as a backdrop for the principal dancers. A ''corps de ballet'' works as one, with synchronized movements and corresponding positioning on the stage. Specific roles are sometimes made for the ''corps de ballet'', such as Swan Lake, the Snow Corps de Ballet and the Flower Corps in ''The Nutcracker''. Principal Dancer
A principal dancer (often shortened to principal) is a dancer at the highest rank within a professional dance company, particularly a ballet company. A principal may be male or female. The position is similar to that of '' soloist''; however, principals regularly perform not only solos, but also pas de deux. Principal dancers can be hired into a dance company or can also be a company dancer that is a corps de ballet dancer that gets promoted from within the company. That process can take multiple performance seasons or even years to achieve based on skill level and company interest. It is a coveted position in the company and the most prominent position a dancer can receive. The term is used mostly in ballet but can be used in other forms as well, such as modern dance. Houston Ballet
Houston Ballet, operated by Houston Ballet Foundation, is a professional ballet company based in Houston, Texas. The company, consisting of 59 dancers, produces over 85 performances per year. History Tatiana Semenova (1955–1967) Houston developed its style for professional ballet beginning in the 1930s, with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. For eleven years, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo spent a week during the Christmas season in Houston performing for Houston audiences. From this exposure grew a desire among patrons for a resident dance company. In the spring of 1955, Tatiana Semenova, a former dancer with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, was invited to start a ballet school in Houston. Semenova accepted, and a state charter was obtained to establish a Houston Foundation for Ballet on July 26, 1955.
