Curb Market
The phrase curbstone broker, curb-stone broker or curb broker refers to a broker who conducts trading on the literal curbs of a financial district. Such brokers were prevalent in the 1800s and early 1900s, and the most famous curb market existed on Broad Street in the financial district of Manhattan. Curbstone brokers often traded stocks that were speculative in nature, as well as stocks in small industrial companies such as iron, textiles and chemicals (''see curb trading''). Efforts to organize and standardize the market started early in the 20th century under notable curb-stone brokers such as Emanuel S. Mendels. A curb (American English) or kerb (British English) is the edge where a raised sidewalk/pavement or road median, road median/central reservation meets a street/other roadway. History Although curbs have been used throughout modern history, and indeed were present in ancient Pompeii, their widespread construction and use only began in the 18th century, as a part of the various movements towards city beautification that were attempted in the period. The Sundays were an English alternative rock band, formed in Bristol. The band's lineup consisted of lead vocalist Harriet Wheeler, guitarist David Gavurin, bassist Paul Brindley, and drummer Patrick Hannan. Percussionist Lindsay Jamieson was a member from 1990 until 1992, and played on the band's first two albums. Having met while attending Bristol University, Wheeler and Gavurin formed the band in 1988. Wheeler had played gigs with Cruel Shoes, an early incarnation of the band Jim Jiminee. The Blair Building, also known as the Blair and Company Building, was an early skyscraper in Lower Manhattan, New York City. History It was constructed in 1902–1903. It was located at 24 Broad Street in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City, and had a white marble facade. It was built by Andrew J. Robinson Company. The ''Architectural Record'' ran an article about it in 1903 titled "A Beaux-Arts Skyscraper". It was demolished in 1955. It was designed by Carrere and Hastings and Edwin Thayer Barlow of the firm was the supervising architect for construction. Henry W. Post was the building's structural engineer. Exchange Place is a street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City. The street runs five blocks between Trinity Place in the west and Hanover Street in the east. Exchange Place was created by 1657 as part of the street plan for the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (modern-day Lower Manhattan), as recorded in the Castello Plan.
