At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, nine events in sprint canoe racing were contested. For the first time, a women's event was part of the Olympic program. Canoeing At The 1936 Summer Olympics
Canoeing was an official Olympic sport for the first time at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. It had been a demonstration sport twelve years earlier at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. A total of nine events were contested at the 1936 Games, all in canoe sprint for men. In total, 158 canoeists from 19 nations took part in the canoe races. All these countries had sent in entries before the deadline, the only late entry came from Latvia, which was as a result excluded from participating in the canoeing competitions. The competitions were held on Friday, August 7, 1936, and Saturday, August 8, 1936. They were held on a regatta course at Grünau on the Langer See. Václav Havel (canoeist)
Václav Havel (5 October 1920 – 14 December 1979) was a Czechoslovak slalom and sprint canoeist who competed from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. He was born in Prague (where he also died). Havel won a silver medal in the C-2 10,000 m event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. He also won a bronze medal in the C-2 1,000 m event at the 1950 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Copenhagen. He also competed in slalom canoeing, winning seven medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. Ernst Gunnar Åkerlund (20 November 1923 – 4 October 2006) was a Swedish sprint canoer who competed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Nils Björklöf
Nils Björklöf (13 April 1921, Ingå – 16 September 1987) was a Finnish sprint canoeist who competed in the late 1940s. He won two bronze medals at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, earning them in the K-2 1000 m and K-2 10000 m events. Björklöf also won a gold medal in the K-2 500 m event at the 1948 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in London. Though born in Finland, Björklöf died in Stockholm, Sweden. Hans Gustaf Bo Berglund (24 February 1918 – 17 September 2006) was a Swedish sprint canoeist who competed from the late 1930s to the late 1940s. He won the gold in the K-2 1000 m event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. Berglund also won two medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships with a gold (K-4 1000 m: 1948) and a silver (K-2 1000 m: 1938). Note that the K-4 1000 m event was not part of the Summer Olympics until the 1964 games in Tokyo.
