Common Tendinous Ring
The common tendinous ring, also known as the annulus of Zinn or annular tendon, is a ring of fibrous tissue surrounding the optic nerve at its entrance at the apex of the orbit. It is the common origin of the four recti muscles of the group of extraocular muscles. It can be used to divide the regions of the superior orbital fissure. The arteries surrounding the optic nerve form a vascular structure known as the circle of Zinn-Haller, or sometimes as the ''circle of Zinn''. Superior Rectus Muscle
The superior rectus muscle is a muscle in the orbit. It is one of the extraocular muscles. It is innervated by the superior division of the oculomotor nerve (III). In the primary position (looking straight ahead), its primary function is elevation, although it also contributes to intorsion and adduction. It is associated with a number of medical conditions, and may be weak, paralysed, overreactive, or even congenitally absent in some people. Structure The superior rectus muscle originates from the annulus of Zinn. It inserts into the anterosuperior surface of the eye. This insertion has a width of around 11 mm. The zonule of Zinn () (Zinn's membrane, ciliary zonule) (after Johann Gottfried Zinn) is a ring of fibrous strands forming a zonule (little band) that connects the ciliary body with the crystalline lens of the eye. The Zonular fibers are viscoelastic cables, although their component microfibrils are stiff structures. These fibers are sometimes collectively referred to as the suspensory ligaments of the lens, as they act like suspensory ligaments. Development The non-pigmented ciliary epithelial cells of the eye synthesize portions of the zonules. Johann Gottfried Zinn
Johann Gottfried Zinn (; December 4, 1727 – April 6, 1759) was a German Anatomy, anatomist and botanist and was a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, Berlin Academy. Biography Johann Gottfried Zinn was born in Schwabach. Considering his short life span, Zinn made a great contribution to the study of anatomy. In his book ''Descriptio anatomica oculi humani'', he provided the first detailed and comprehensive anatomy of the human eye. In 1753 Johann Gottfried Zinn became director of the Botanic garden of the University of Göttingen, and in 1755, professor in the medical faculty. In 1757 Zinn described the orchid genus ''Epipactis'' that belongs to the family (biology), family Orchidaceae. He died in Göttingen. Eponyms Botanist Carl Linnaeus designated a genus of flowers in the family Asteraceae native from Mexico as ''Zinnia'' in his honour. Nasociliary Nerve
The nasociliary nerve is a branch of the ophthalmic nerve (CN V1) (which is in turn a branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V)). It is intermediate in size between the other two branches of the ophthalmic nerve, the frontal nerve and lacrimal nerve. The oculomotor nerve, also known as the third cranial nerve, cranial nerve III, or simply CN III, is a cranial nerve that enters the orbit through the superior orbital fissure and innervates extraocular muscles that enable most movements of the eye and that raise the eyelid.
