Coimbatore (Tamil: kōyamputtūr, ), also known as Kovai (), is one of the major Metropolitan cities of India, metropolitan cities in the States and union territories of India, Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the banks of the Noyyal River and surrounded by the Western Ghats. Coimbatore is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu after Chennai in terms of population and the 16th largest List of million-plus urban agglomerations in India, urban agglomeration in India as per the 2011 Census of India, census 2011. It is the administrative capital of Coimbatore District and is administered by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation which was established in 1981. Coimbatore District is one of the 38 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Coimbatore is the administrative headquarters of the district. It is one of the most industrialized districts and a major textile, industrial, commercial, educational, information technology, healthcare and manufacturing hub of Tamil Nadu. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation is the civic body that governs the city of Coimbatore in the States and union territories of India, Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the second largest municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu after Greater Chennai Corporation, Chennai with an area of 257.04 sq km. The Mayor of Coimbatore is the first citizen of the Indian city of Coimbatore. The elected mayor s the chief administrator of the city, and serves alongside 99 councillors of the Coimbatore Corporation. The office of Mayor of Coimbatore, is currently held by R.Ranganayaki since 6 August 2024. The Mayor is elected directly by the electorate. This was temporarily scrapped in 2006 in favour of an indirect election among the councillors. Coimbatore Town Hall, previously known as Victoria Town Hall, is a neoclassical building in Coimbatore, India. It is situated in the central part of the city in the Townhall area, which was named after the building itself. It was built in 1892 and was originally named after Queen Victoria. Perur Pateeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Perur, in western part of Coimbatore in state of Tamil Nadu in India. Maruthamalai Marudhachalamurthy Temple
The Marudhamalai Murugan Temple, or the Maruthamalai Marudhachalamurthy Temple, is a 12th-century hill temple situated in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. Built by Tamil people, Tamil kings during the Sangam period as indicated in the ''Purananuru'', the temple is dedicated to Murugan, a form of Kartikeya.
