Blinding (punishment)
Blinding is a type of physical punishment which results in complete or nearly complete loss of vision. It was used as an act of revenge and torture. The punishment has been used since Antiquity; Greek mythology makes several references to blinding as divine punishment, which reflects human practice. In the Byzantine Empire and many other historical societies, blinding was accomplished by gouging out the eyes, sometimes using a hot poker, and by pouring a boiling substance, such as vinegar, on them. In mythology and religious law Oedipus gouged out his own eyes after accidentally fulfilling the prophecy that he would end up killing his father and marrying his mother. In the Bible, Samson was blinded upon his capture by the Philistines. Early Christians were often blinded as a penalty for their beliefs. For example, Saint Lucy's torturers tore out her eyes. In cryptography, blinding is a technique by which an agent can provide a service to (i.e., compute a function for) a client in an encoded form without knowing either the real input or the real output. Blinding techniques also have applications to preventing side-channel attacks on encryption devices. More precisely, Alice has an input ''x'' and Oscar has a function ''f''. Alice would like Oscar to compute for her without revealing either ''x'' or ''y'' to him. The reason for her wanting this might be that she doesn't know the function ''f'' or that she does not have the resources to compute it. ''The Blinding EP'' is an EP by English indie rock band Babyshambles. It was the band's first release since signing with major record label Parlophone. The EP was released on 4 December 2006 in the United Kingdom to positive critical reviews by that label's offshoot Regal Records (see 2006 in British music) and on 5 December in the United States by Capitol Records. The album follows the release of Jay Electronica's debut mixtape, '' Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge)'', almost 13 years earlier. ''A Written Testimony'' was primarily recorded in 40 days, from December 2019 to February 2020. ''Lungs'' is the debut studio album by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine, released on 3 July 2009 by Island Records. After working on various projects, Florence Welch formed a band which included Robert Ackroyd, Chris Hayden, Mark Saunders, Tom Monger, and former collaborator Isabella Summers. The album features production from James Ford, Paul Epworth, Stephen Mackey, Eg White and Charlie Hugall, with additional production by band member Isabella Summers. The album has been reissued several times: an expanded version titled ''Between Two Lungs'' (2010), a digital EP subtitled ''The B-Sides'' (2011), and a ''Tenth Anniversary Edition'' (2019). ''Auto da Fé'' (original title ''Die Blendung'', "The Blinding") is a 1935 novel by Elias Canetti; the title of the English translation (by C. V. Wedgwood, Jonathan Cape, Ltd, 1946) refers to the burning of heretics by the Inquisition. The first American edition of Wedgewood's translation was titled ''The Tower of Babel'' (Alfred A. Knopf, 1947). Publication history The book manuscript was finished in 1931, and the book was published in 1935, by Herbert Reichner in Vienna (Canetti's home at that time). It is Canetti's first publication. In 1943 Canetti got an offer to publish the book in English with Jonathan Cape, but it was decided to delay publication until after the war. Blind Experiment
In a blind or blinded experiment, information which may influence the participants of the experiment is withheld until after the experiment is complete. Good blinding can reduce or eliminate experimental biases that arise from a participants' expectations, observer's effect on the participants, observer bias, confirmation bias, and other sources. A blind can be imposed on any participant of an experiment, including subjects, researchers, technicians, data analysts, and evaluators. In some cases, while blinding would be useful, it is impossible or unethical. For example, it is not possible to blind a patient to their treatment in a physical therapy intervention. A good clinical protocol ensures that blinding is as effective as possible within ethical and practical constraints.
