Base Addresses
In computing, a base address is an address serving as a reference point ("base") for other addresses. Related addresses can be accessed using an ''addressing scheme''. Under the ''relative addressing'' scheme, to obtain an absolute address, the relevant base address is taken and an offset (aka displacement) is added to it. Under this type of scheme, the base address is the lowest numbered address within a prescribed range, to facilitate adding related positive-valued offsets. In IBM System/360 architecture, the base address is a 24-bit value in a general register (extended in steps to 64 bits in z/Architecture), and the offset is a 12 bit value in the instruction (extended to 20 bits in z/Architecture). Offset (computer Science)
In computer science, an offset within an array or other data structure object is an integer indicating the distance (displacement) between the beginning of the object and a given element or point, presumably within the same object. The concept of a distance is valid only if all elements of the object are of the same size (typically given in bytes or words). For example, if A is an array of characters containing "abcdef", the fourth element containing the character 'd' has an offset of three from the start of A. Z/Architecture
z/Architecture, initially and briefly called ESA Modal Extensions (ESAME), is IBM's 64-bit complex instruction set computer (CISC) instruction set architecture, implemented by its mainframe computers. An index register in a computer's central processing unit, CPU is a processor register (or an assigned memory location) used for pointing to operand addresses during the run of a program. In computing, rebasing is the process of modifying data based on one reference to another. It can be one of the following: Shared libraries Rebasing is the process of creating a shared library image in such a way that it is guaranteed to use virtual memory without conflicting with any other shared libraries loadable in the system. IBM VM/370 ''discontinuous saved segments'' (DCSS) were an early example of this technique, though not called ''rebasing''.
