Ans (; wa, Anse) is a municipality and city of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Ans had a total population of 27,322. The total area is 23.35 km² which gives a population density of 1,170 inhabitants per km². Its postal code is 4430. Ans is the finish location of the road bicycle race Liège–Bastogne–Liège, the oldest of the classic cycle races held every April. The ANS synthesizer is a photoelectronic musical instrument created by Russian engineer Evgeny Murzin from 1937 to 1957. The technological basis of his invention was the method of graphical sound recording used in cinematography (developed in Russia concurrently with USA), which made it possible to obtain a visible image of a sound wave, as well as to realize the opposite goal— synthesizing a sound from an artificially drawn sound spectrogram. In this case the sine waves generated by the ANS are printed onto five glass discs using a process that Murzin (an optical engineer) had to develop himself. Each disc has 144 individual tracks printed onto it, for a total of 720 microtones (discrete pitches), spanning 10 octaves. This yields a resolution of 1/72 octave (16.67 cents). ''ANS'' is a box set by Coil. The album uses a strange and esoteric photoelectric synthesizer known as the ANS synthesizer. It was built around half a century ago and still to this day sits where it was originally conceived; in the Moscow State University. Release history This 3 CD release also came with a DVD that held animations created by Peter Christopherson which synched with four songs that are not included on any of the CDs. It is an expanded release of ''ANS'', with CD A being the same as that release. Originally limited to 500 copies, it was re-released together with several other albums. The re-release appears to be mostly identical to the original edition, the only notable difference being that the front covers of the CDs and DVD are slightly different now.
