Yakan People
The Yakan people are among the major indigenous Filipino ethnolinguistic groups in the Sulu Archipelago. Having a significant number of followers of Islam, it is considered one of the 13 Moro groups in the Philippines. The Yakans mainly reside in Basilan but are also in Zamboanga City. They speak a language known as '' Bissa Yakan'', which has characteristics of both Sama-Bajau Sinama and Tausug (Jundam 1983: 7-8). It is written in the Malayan Arabic script, with adaptations to sounds not present in Arabic (Sherfan 1976). The Yakan have a traditional horse culture. They are renowned for their weaving traditions. Culturally, they are Sama people who eventually led a life on land, mostly in Basilan and Zamboanga city. Yakan is an Austronesian language primarily spoken on Basilan Island in the Philippines. It is the native language of the Yakan people, the indigenous as well as the largest ethnic group on the island. It has a total of 110,000 native speakers. Despite being located in the Philippines, it is not closely related to other languages of the country. Cape Yakan (russian: Мыс Якан – ''Mys Yakan'') is a headland on the northern coast of Chukotka, Russian Federation. This conspicuous cape, whose name in the Chukchi language means "use", was mentioned by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld in his Vega Expedition. Geography Cape Yakan is located in the Long Strait area, west of Cape Schmidt and about 65 km to the east of Cape Billings near the mouth of the Ekaenmyvaam River. Adly Yakan Pasha (18 January 1864 – 22 October 1933) ( ar, عدلي يكن باشا), sometimes referred to as Adly Pasha, was an Egyptian political figure.
