Xilinx, Inc. ( ) was an American technology and semiconductor company that primarily supplied programmable logic devices. The company is renowned for inventing the first commercially viable field-programmable gate array (FPGA). A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is a type of configurable integrated circuit that can be repeatedly programmed after manufacturing. FPGAs are a subset of logic devices referred to as programmable logic devices (PLDs). They consist of an array of programmable logic device, programmable logic block, logic blocks with a connecting grid, that can be configured "in the field" to interconnect with other logic blocks to perform various digital functions. Victor Peng (; born 1960) is a Taiwanese-American technology executive and the president of Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group at AMD. He was the CEO of Xilinx, an American technology company that supplies programmable logic devices before it was acquired by AMD. Career Peng received a Bachelor of Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Engineering degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University. He holds four U.S. patents about engineering apparatus and methods from his work at Act-Rx Technology Corporation and Digital Equipment Corporation. Ross Freeman
Ross Freeman (July 26, 1948 – October 22, 1989), was an American electrical engineer and inventor, and co-founder of the leading FPGA developer Xilinx. Early life and education Freeman was born in the upper peninsula of Michigan on July 26, 1948. He grew up on a farm near Engadine, Michigan. Freeman earned a BS degree in physics from Michigan State University in 1969 and a master’s from University of Illinois in 1971. He worked in the Peace Corps for several years, then went to Teletype Corporation to design a custom PMOS circuit. Founding of Xilinx Ross postulated that because of Moore's Law, transistors would be getting less expensive each year, making customizable programmable chips affordable. Bernard Valentine Vonderschmitt (October 14, 1923 – June 9, 2004) was an electrical engineer, most noted as a co-founder of leading FPGA producer Xilinx. Biography He was born on October 14, 1923, in Jasper, Indiana. Vonderschmitt graduated with a BSEE from Rose Polytechnic Institute in 1944. He also received an MSEE degree from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from Rider University, and eventually an honorary doctorate from that same institution. Vonderschmitt began his career with RCA, and worked with them for 34 years, taking a short time during World War II to serve in the US Navy as an electronics officer. He holds 13 patents that cover color television and solid state electronics. After leaving RCA, he worked briefly for Zilog, before co-founding Xilinx together with Ross Freeman in 1984. A complex programmable logic device (CPLD) is a programmable logic device with complexity between that of PALs and FPGAs, and architectural features of both. The main building block of the CPLD is a macrocell, which contains logic implementing disjunctive normal form expressions and more specialized logic operations. A programmable logic device (PLD) is an electronic component used to build reconfigurable digital circuits. Unlike digital logic constructed using discrete logic gates with fixed functions, the function of a PLD is undefined at the time of manufacture. Before the PLD can be used in a circuit it must be programmed to implement the desired function. Compared to fixed logic devices, programmable logic devices simplify the design of complex logic and may offer superior performance.
