Xenia (plants)
Xenia (also known as the xenia effect) in plants is the effect of pollen on seeds and fruit of the fertilized plant. The effect is separate from the contribution of the pollen towards the next generation. The term was coined in 1881 by the botanist Wilhelm Olbers Focke to refer to effects on maternal tissues, including the seed coat and pericarp, but at that time endosperm was also thought to be a maternal tissue, and the term became closely associated with endosperm effects. The term metaxenia was later coined and is still sometimes used to describe the effects on purely maternal tissues. The 1974 Xenia tornado was a violent, large and extremely powerful Fujita scale, F5 tornado that destroyed a large portion of Xenia, Ohio, Xenia and Wilberforce, Ohio, Wilberforce, Ohio, United States in Greater Dayton, Metro Dayton on the afternoon of April 3, 1974. It was the deadliest individual tornado of the 1974 Super Outbreak, the 24-hour period between April 3 and April 4, 1974, during which 148 tornadoes touched down in 13 different U.S. states. The 1974 Xenia tornado is considered one of the worst tornadoes in American history and has been a major driving force behind improvements to warning systems, alarms, and safety protocols across the United States. Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach
Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach (Dresden, 3 January 1823 – Hamburg, 6 May 1889) was a botanist and the foremost Germany, German orchidologist of the 19th century. His father Ludwig Reichenbach, Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (author of ''Icones Florae Germanicae et Helveticae'') was also a well-known botanist. Biography He started his study of orchids at the age of 18 and assisted his father in the writing of ''Icones''. He became a Doctor in Botany with his work on the pollen of orchids (see ‘Selected Works’). Soon after his graduation, Reichenbach was appointed to the post of extraordinary professor of botany at the University of Leipzig, Leipzig in 1855. Marcus Valerius Martialis (known in English as Martial ; March, between 38 and 41 AD – between 102 and 104 AD) was a Roman and Celtiberian poet born in Bilbilis, Hispania (modern Spain) best known for his twelve books of '' Epigrams'', published in Rome between AD 86 and 103, during the reigns of the emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan. In these poems he satirises city life and the scandalous activities of his acquaintances, and romanticises his provincial upbringing. ''Xenia'' () is a 2014 drama film directed by Panos H. Koutras. It was selected to compete in the ''Un Certain Regard'' section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. It was the Greek entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Foreign Language Film award at the 88th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. ''Xenia'' has won six awards from the Hellenic Film Academy. Xenia College (earlier names: Xenia Female Academy, Xenia Female Seminary and Collegiate Institute, Xenia Female College) was an American educational institution located in Xenia, Ohio. Established as a private school, its management shifted after a couple of years to the Methodist Episcopal Church. Changing its name frequently during the first few years of its existence made it difficult to follow its career. Starting as the Xenia Female Academy in 1850, it became the Xenia Female Seminary and Collegiate Institute in 1854, the Xenia Female College in 1856, and Xenia College in 1863, continuing under the latter designation until it closed its doors in the latter part of the 1880s. Xenia was a Yugoslav pop rock band from Rijeka, active from 1981 to 1985. Their discography includes two 7-inch singles singles and two studio albums. Biography The band was formed in 1981 by Vesna Vrandečić and Robert Funčić. USS ''Xenia'' (AKA-51) was an in service with the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. She was then sold to Chile, where she served as ''Presidente Errazuriz'' until 1966. The Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Xenia are a series of multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) developed by Daihatsu and marketed by both Toyota and Daihatsu, mainly sold with three-row seating. The Avanza and Xenia were developed as an entry-level MPV marketed mainly for the Indonesian and other emerging markets, and mainly produced in Indonesia by Astra Daihatsu Motor. The Xenia was an American cyclecar designed by P. E. Hawkins of Cleveland and manufactured in Xenia, Ohio in 1914. The factory was Fred Baldner's machine shop, in which Baldner manufactured his own car from 1900 to 1903. The Model 14A was built with the odd combination of an epicyclic gearbox and belt final drive, and was powered by an 1164 cc vee-twin Deluxe engine. The body seated two passengers in a tandem arrangement, and the car sold for $395.
