Joseph Sugar Baly
Joseph Sugar Baly (1816 – 27 March 1890) was an English medical doctor and entomologist. He described a number of species of beetle in the family Chrysomelidae. Baly was born in Warwick, first son of Joseph Baly. He studied at the local grammar school under Reverend George Innes. He then studied at St. George's Hospital and worked with Dr Burd at the Shrewsbury Infirmary. He also studied in Paris before practicing medicine at Leamington. He later established a large practice in London. He became interested in entomology in his thirties after taking up microscope studies. Baly became a specialist on the leaf-feeding beetles, then placed in the Coleoptera: Chrysomeloidea, Phytophaga. He mostly described species collected by others and was one of the first entomologists to examine the male genitalia of insects for species diagnosis. He sold off his London practice in 1868 due to poor health and moved back to Warwick where he served as an honorary curator of the museum. He worked o ...

Biologia Centrali-Americana
The ''Biologia Centrali-Americana'' is an encyclopedia of the natural history of Mexico and Central America, privately issued in 215 parts from 1879 to 1915 by the editors Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin, of the British Museum (Natural History) in London. It was begun by Alfred Maudslay publishing his first long-form description of the Archaeology at Chichen Itza (London: R.H. Porter and Dulau, 1889–1902). This work is still fundamental for the study of Neotropical plants and animals, because it contains almost all that was known of the biodiversity of Mexico and Central America at the time of its publication. Leading scientists of the day were the authors of the volumes. The whole series has 63 volumes with 1677 lithograph plates (more than 900 of which are in color) depicting 18,587 subjects. In total, 50,263 species are treated, of which 19,263 are described as new. Archaeology was added to the already monumental project because of new discoveries in the region. ...

Martin Jacoby
Martin Jacoby (12 April 1842, Altona, Hamburg, Altona, Duchy of Holstein – 24 December 1907, London) was a German entomologist who specialised in Coleoptera, especially Chrysomelidae (formerly known as Phytophaga). He was also a musician who played in the orchestra of the Royal Italian Opera in London, and later became a violin tutor. Jacoby was born in Altona, Hamburg, Altona near Hamburg and grew up near the port. He later became a leather merchant but his interest was in music and natural history. He studied violin and at the age of twenty he gave up his leather business and moved to England to join Sir Charles Hallé's orchestra in Manchester. He also began to collect insects and birds even before leaving Germany. He was in touch with many German entomological collectors like Thörey, Koltze, and Gräser. He sold off his first large entomological collection to Jacob R. H. Neervoort van de Poll, Van der Poll of Holland in 1880. The ornithologist Edward Hargitt advised him to ...
