Wisconsin School (diplomatic History)
The Wisconsin School of American diplomatic history is a school of thought that emerged from the history department of the University of Wisconsin in the 1950s and 1960s. The school, exemplified by the work of William Appleman Williams and also including as core members Walter LaFeber, Thomas J. McCormick, and Lloyd Gardner, generally holds that economic reasons, and the desire for increased markets abroad, were the driver behind much of American foreign policy and the creation of an American empire during the 19th century. These beliefs – which consigned to subordinate status other possible explanations such as morality, security, and balance-of-power calculations – have been referred to as the "Open Door Interpretation", in reference to the Open Door Notes of 1899 and 1900. American Diplomatic History
The diplomatic history of the United States oscillated among three positions: isolation from diplomatic entanglements of other (typically European) nations (but with economic connections to the world); alliances with European and other military partners; and unilateralism, or operating on its own sovereign policy decisions. The US always was large in terms of area, but its population was small, only 4 million in 1790. Population growth was rapid, reaching 7.2 million in 1810, 32 million in 1860, 76 million in 1900, 132 million in 1940, and 316 million in 2013. The University of Wisconsin–Madison (University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin, UW, UW–Madison, or simply Madison) is a public land-grant research university in Madison, Wisconsin. Gabriel Kolko
Gabriel Morris Kolko (August 17, 1932 – May 19, 2014) was an American historian. His research interests included American capitalism and political history, the Progressive Era, and U.S. foreign policy in the 20th century. One of the best-known revisionist historians to write about the Cold War, he had also been credited as "an incisive critic of the Progressive Era and its relationship to the American empire." The Frankfurt School (german: Frankfurter Schule) is a school of social theory and critical philosophy associated with the Institute for Social Research, at Goethe University Frankfurt in 1929. Carl Parrini
Carl Parrini (February 22, 1933 - December 13, 2016) was an American historian. For many years he taught at Northern Illinois University. He was a specialist in US diplomatic history. Born in Rochester, New York, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before transferring to and graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a B.A. (1955).''Directory of American Scholars'', 6th ed. Fred Harvey Harrington
Fred Harvey Harrington (June 24, 1912 – April 8, 1995) was an American educator and the 17th President of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1962 to 1970. Career Born in Watertown, Harrington received his Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University (1933), and his Master of Arts (1934) and Doctor of Philosophy (1937), both from New York University, where he also taught as an instructor during the 1936-1937 academic year. Upon graduating, he immediately took the post of Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1940, Harrington moved to the University of Arkansas as a full professor of history and political science, and had a brief spell as a visiting professor at West Virginia University in 1942.
