Thomas William Murphy (3 November 1863 – 26 July 1939) was a New Zealand boxer. An early World Featherweight Champion, he was the first world champion of any weightclass to come from New Zealand. In his early career, he took the New Zealand Lightweight Championship. He was a prolific boxer who fought more than two hundred fights, with a few going as long as thirty and forty rounds. He was known more for a powerful punch than an exceptional defense. Early life and career Murphy was born in Auckland and began boxing there before continuing his career in Australia. William Murphy (born November 13, 1989) is an American professional baseball pitching coach for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball. Murphy grew up in Cranford, New Jersey and attended Roselle Catholic High School in Roselle, New Jersey, where he pitched for the baseball team for three years and Wagner College, where he played first base on the baseball team for one year. He coached for Georgetown University and Brown University before he was hired by the Astros before the 2016 season. In 2022, the Astros won 106 games, the second-highest total in franchise history. They advanced to the World Series and defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to give Murphy his first career World Series title. He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays, with an 0–0 record in the Major Leagues. He has also played in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Chiba Lotte Marines being one of the most highly known pitchers in Japan during the 2010 season. He played as a shortstop in Major League Baseball for the New York Giants. William Francis Murphy (May 11, 1885 – February 7, 1950) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the first bishop of the new Diocese of Saginaw in Michigan from 1938 until his death in 1950. Biography Early life William Murphy was born on May 11, 1885, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to William and Mary (née Gibson) Murphy. His parents were Irish immigrants who came to the United States from County Wexford. One of ten children, Murphy was the youngest child and only son; three of his sisters became nuns. He received his early education at the parochial school of St. Augustine's Parish and at Lefevre Institute, both in Kalamazoo. Murphy then studied at St. Jerome's College in Kitchener, Ontario and at Assumption College in Sandwich, Ontario.
