Wil Velders-Vlasblom
Wil Velders-Vlasblom (2 May 1930 - 20 January 2019) was a Dutch politician and woman's rights activist. She was the first woman alderman in Utrecht, and later served as mayor of Beverwijk. During the 1970s and a portion of the 1980s, Velders-Vlasblom was the face of the Labour Party (Netherlands), PvdA party in Utrecht. Early life and education Wilhelmina ("Wil") Velders-Vlasblom was born in Schiedam, 2 May 1930. Her father was a coppersmith at a shipyard. She had four brothers. Velders-Vlasblom grew up in Rotterdam. Before World War II, her parents were members of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (Netherlands), SDAP (predecessor of the PvdA) and she was then a member of the Arbeiders Jeugd Centrale (AJC). In 1943, the Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs (MULO) she was attending was bombed, and she was unable to finish school. Wil () is the capital of the ''Wahlkreis'' (constituency) of Wil (Wahlkreis), Wil in the Cantons of Switzerland, canton of St. Gallen (canton), St. Gallen in Switzerland. The gender pay gap or gender wage gap is the average difference between the remuneration for men and women who are working. Women are generally found to be paid less than men. There are two distinct numbers regarding the pay gap: non-adjusted versus adjusted pay gap. The latter typically takes into account differences in hours worked, occupations chosen, education and job experience. In the United States, for example, the non-adjusted average woman's annual salary is 79% of the average man's salary, compared to 95% for the adjusted average salary. The reasons link to legal, social and economic factors, and extend beyond "equal pay for equal work". Rooie Vrouwen in de PvdA ("Red Women in the PvdA") was the name of a woman's organization active in the Dutch Labour Party, the PvdA. The organization started as a union of women's organizations, called '' "union of social-democrat women's clubs'' at the time of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (Netherlands), one of the predecessors of the PvdA. The organization's goal was to emancipate the "masses of proletarian women". It owned a building named "De Born" in Bennekom, in the countryside, which allowed its members--at the time "proletarian girls"--the opportunity to spend some time outside of the cities where they worked. The organization was renamed ''Vrouwencontact in de PvdA'' in 1969, and from 1975 on ''Rooie Vrouwen in de PvdA'', a more "catchy" name chosen to align the group with, and draw membership from, the second wave of feminism. Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs (Dutch, "more advanced primary education") was during part of the twentieth century a level of education in the Netherlands (and the Dutch East Indies), comparable with the junior high school level in the US education system. Its successors were the mavo and vbo, now both replaced by vmbo. This level of education was used up to 2021 in Suriname, when it was replaced with "voortgezet onderwijs". In Suriname, MULO was a four year program. It was split into MULO-A which was focused on business and MULO-B which was focused on science. After graduating, students could move onto three-year VWO leading to university or a two-year HAVO leading to higher vocational training.
