Mary Whitehouse
Constance Mary Whitehouse (; 13 June 1910 – 23 November 2001) was a British teacher and conservative activist. She campaigned against social liberalism and the mainstream British media, both of which she accused of encouraging a more permissive society. She was the founder and first president of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association, through which she led a longstanding campaign against the BBC. A hard-line social conservative, she was termed a reactionary by her socially liberal opponents. Her motivation derived from her Christian beliefs, her aversion to the rapid social and political changes in British society of the 1960s, and her work as a teacher of sex education. Sheldon Whitehouse
Sheldon Whitehouse (born October 20, 1955) is an American lawyer and politician serving since 2007 as the junior United States senator from Rhode Island. A member of the Democratic Party, he served from 1993 to 1998 as the United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island and from 1999 to 2003 as the 71st attorney general of Rhode Island. In 2006, he was elected to the Senate, defeating Republican incumbent Lincoln Chafee. He was reelected in 2012, 2018, and 2024. A political progressive and climate hawk, Whitehouse became chair of the United States Senate Committee on the Budget in 2023. Elliott Mark Whitehouse (born 27 October 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Matlock Town on loan from club Macclesfield. Whitehouse is a product of Sheffield United's academy and had loan spells with York City and Alfreton Town before being released in 2014. He joined Notts County and after a loan spell with Nuneaton Town was released in 2015. He had a short spell with FC Halifax Town before joining Nuneaton Town permanently. Edwin Sheldon Whitehouse (February 5, 1883 – August 5, 1965) was an American diplomat who served as the U.S. Minister to Guatemala and U.S. Minister to Colombia. Early life Whitehouse was born on February 5, 1883, in New York City. He was one of five children born to William Fitzhugh Whitehouse (1842–1909), a New York lawyer, and Frances Sheldon (1852–1944), the niece of William B. Ogden, the first Mayor of Chicago. His brothers included Norman Ogden Whitehouse, Henry John Whitehouse and William Fitzhugh Whitehouse Jr. His sister, Lily Whitehouse, was married to the Hon. Frederick William Whitehouse (20 December 1900 – 22 March 1973) was a noted geologist, born in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. Life Raised in Ipswich to Frederick William Whitehouse senior and Florence Amelia Terrey, he was the oldest of five children. His parents owned a successful cake and catering business in Ipswich. Whitehouse were an English noise music band formed in 1980. The group is largely credited for the founding of the power electronics genre. Whitehouse was founded and ended as a duo consisting of electronics player Philip Best and vocalist William Bennett, however the group is perhaps best–recognized for their 20-year-tenure as a three-piece with synthist Peter Sotos as a member, who joined the band in 1983 and left in 2003. History and personnel The name Whitehouse was chosen both in mock tribute to the British morality campaigner Mary Whitehouse, and in reference to a British pornographic magazine of the same name. Edward Orange Wildman Whitehouse (1 October 1816 – 26 January 1890) was an English surgeon by profession and an electrical experimenter by avocation. He was recruited by entrepreneur Cyrus West Field as Chief Electrician to work on the pioneering endeavour to lay the first transatlantic telegraph cable for the Atlantic Telegraph Company between western Ireland to eastern Newfoundland. This pioneering project of the Victorian era began in 1854 and was completed in 1858; however the cable functioned for only three weeks. While Whitehouse sent the first telegraph communications on 16 August 1858 to the United States of America, he was ultimately held responsible for the undersea cable failure after he applied higher voltages in an effort to boost declining signals.
