West Coast Wilderness Railway
The West Coast Wilderness Railway is a reconstruction of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Mount Lyell railway in Western Tasmania between Queenstown and Regatta Point, Strahan. The railway is significant because of its Abt rack system to conquer the mountainous terrain through rainforest, with original locomotives still operating on the railway today. Now operating as a tourist experience with a focus on sharing the history of Tasmania's West Coast, the original railway began operations in 1897 as the only link between Queenstown and the port of Strahan. Murchison Highway
The Murchison Highway is a highway located in the West Coast, Tasmania, West Coast region of Tasmania, Australia. The highway runs generally north–south, with Somerset, Tasmania, Somerset, near Burnie, as its northern terminus and Zeehan, Tasmania, Zeehan as its southern terminus. The highway was opened on 13 December 1963. Part of the highway from to Burnie was known as the Waratah Highway until 1973. Course The highway is susceptible to ice and snow in winter. One of the notorious sections is at the edge of Mount Black (Tasmania), Mount Black; numerous accidents have occurred in the area. Also the Zeehan, Tasmania, Zeehan to Rosebery, Tasmania, Rosebery section has hazardous sections which can be affected by cold and wet weather. Queenstown (Tasmania) Railway Station
Queenstown in Western Tasmania has had two railway stations. The original was built for the railway built for the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, and lasted until the closing of the railway line in 1962. The newer station was built for the re-built railway, the West Coast Wilderness Railway. First station (1890s-1962) The older station was across from the western end of Orr Street, Queenstown and the Empire Hotel, without an extensive covering roof. It was covered in the 1920s. James Alexander Bacon, AC (15 May 195020 June 2004) was an Australian politician who served as Premier of Tasmania from 1998 to 2004. Early life Bacon was born on 15 May 1950 in Melbourne; his father Frank, a doctor, died when Jim was twelve, leaving him to be raised by his mother Joan.
