Wau railway station is a railway station located in Wau, South Sudan, just south of the airport. The station is on the Babanusa-Wau Railway Babanusa-Wau Railway is an international railway line from the town of Babanusa in Sudan to South Sudan's second largest city Wau. As of January 2020, the station building was being used by the South Sudanese police while the tracks around the station were overgrown or covered by sand. Land Grabbing On November 6, 2016, The railway station staff sent a petition letter to the State government complaining of military officials grabbing land and settling within the area. The Wau town Mayor Mel Aleu Goc sent warnings saying, "Anyone who had set up structures at the station has done so illegally and is therefore ordered to leave the railway station". Wau (Arabic: واو ''Wāw''; also known as Wow, Waw, or Wau Town) is a city in northwestern South Sudan, on the western bank of the Jur River, that serves as capital for Western Bahr el Ghazal (and formerly Wau State). It lies approximately northwest of the capital Juba. A culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse urban center and trading hub, Wau is also the former headquarters of Western Bahr el Ghazal. History Wau was initially established by the French as Fort Desaix and later was established as a '' zariba'' (fortified base) by slave-traders in the 19th century. During the time of condominium rule, the city became an administrative center. Babanusa-Wau Railway is an international railway line from the town of Babanusa in Sudan to South Sudan's second largest city Wau. It terminates at Wau Railway Station. The gauge railway line is 445.5 km long. 195.5 km are running on Sudanese territory, 250 km on South Sudanese territory. The South Sudanese section of the railway line is currently the only railway in South Sudan. The railway is operational, but traffic on the railway line depends on several factors like the political and economical relations between Sudan and South Sudan, the existence of rebel forces close to the railway line in both Sudan and South Sudan and on the regional political climate during the South Sudanese Civil War.
