Water Polo At The 2000 Summer Olympics
The water polo competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia saw Hungary’s return to the gold medal platform and the introduction of the women’s tournament. The Australian women had lobbied the IOC hard for the inclusion of women’s water polo in the Olympics, including showing up at the airport dressed only in their swimsuits during one pre-Olympic visit by members of the IOC. Six nations competed in the women’s tournament with home team Australia winning the gold medal over the United States. Twelve nations competed in the men’s tournament and played a total of 48 matches. Spain was unable to follow up their 1996 gold medal performance with a medal. Hungary defeated Russia for the gold medal. The matches were held at Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre and the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre. Tamás Molnár (born August 2, 1975) is a Hungarian former water polo player, who played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics. He is one of ten male athletes who won three Olympic gold medals in water polo. He made his debut for the national team in 1997, and was named ''Hungarian Water Polo Player of the Year'' in 1998. He won the Malta Waterpolo Summer League title with Neptunes Emirates (St. Julians, MALTA) in 2010-14. With this he earned a national record of winning 5 leagues in succession for the club previously unachieved by any other team, making him one of the most successful foreign players for the club as well as to play in the country in the sports local history. Attila Vári (born 26 February 1976 in Budapest), nicknamed ''Doki'', is a Hungarian water polo player, who played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics. Vári began his athletic career with modern pentathlon but later switched to water polo. He made his debut for the Hungarian national team in 1997. Attila's back hand shot from ten meters in the 2000 Olympic finals against Russia was probably the most unexpected and spectacular goal anyone ever scored in an Olympic final game in water polo. The 1999 FINA Women's Water Polo World Cup was the twelfth edition of the event, organised by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). The event took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada from May 24 to May 29, 1999. Participating teams were the eight leading teams from the World Championships. The tournament served as a qualifier for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
