Walter Alison Phillips
Walter Alison Phillips (21 October 1864 – 28 October 1950) was an English historian, a specialist in the history of Europe in the 19th century. From 1914 to 1939 he was the first holder of the Lecky chair of History in Trinity College, Dublin. Most of his writing is in the name of W. Alison Phillips, and he was sometimes referred to as Alison Phillips. A former president of the Oxford Union and special correspondent of ''The Times'' newspaper, he was a prolific author, including contributions to the ''Encyclopædia Britannica'', of which for eight years he was chief assistant editor. Early life The son of John and Jane Phillips of Epsom in Surrey, Phillips was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, which he left in 1882, then at Merton College, Oxford, where he was an exhibitioner, and lastly from 1886 at St John's, where he was Senior Scholar. Walter Phillips (1 April 1881 – 21 June 1948) was an English first-class cricketer. Phillips was born at West Malling in Kent, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Lambert Phillips ('' née'' Hayward). Walter Shelley Phillips, known as El Comancho, was a self-educated and self-trained naturalist, artist, geologist, newspaper reporter, freelance writer and author of numerous books. Biography Phillips was born on March 3, 1867, in Fairbury, Illinois, to parents Oregon Harry and Eliza Jennie (McDowell) Phillips. The Phillips family traveled between Illinois and Pennsylvania until March 1869, when they moved by covered wagon to Beatrice, Nebraska. It was there that Phillips first became familiar with many Native American tribes, including the Otoes, Pawnees, Omahas, Sioux, Kiowa, Kansas and others. As a child, he spent much of his time with the Otoes and often lived for weeks at a time with the tribe’s chief and the chief’s family in their lodge and accompanied them on buffalo hunts. Walter Phillips (July 7, 1925 – March 26, 2008) was an American radio personality best known for hosting WGN's morning radio show from Chicago for 21 years from January 1965 until July 1986, and was number one in the morning slot from 1968 until he left for an afternoon radio slot in 1986. A pioneer of the radio call-in talk show format, Phillips delighted in a form now banned by the FCC: putting people on the air without their knowledge. Early life Phillips was born in Portsmouth, Ohio. Six years later, after his father's death from tuberculosis, his family (including three siblings) moved to Cincinnati. Phillips later dropped out of high school to join the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, but he ended up in Georgia in a tow target squadron assigned to fly practice targets for fighter pilots and anti-aircraft artillery.
