Handley Page Type W
The Handley Page W.8, W.9 and W.10 were British two- and three-engine medium-range biplane airliners designed and built by Handley Page. The W.8 (also known as the H.P.18) was the company's first purpose-built civil airliner although it was a development of the wartime Handley Page Type O/400 bomber via the O/7, O/10 and O/11 transports. It had an enclosed cabin for (in most versions) 12 passengers, along with two crew in an open cockpit, and has the distinction of being the world's first airliner to be designed with an on-board lavatory. The prototype first flew on 4 December 1919, shortly after it was displayed at the 1919 Paris Air Show at Le Bourget. A W engine is a type of piston engine where three or four cylinder banks share the same crankshaft, resembling the letter "W" when viewed from the front. W engines with three banks of cylinders are also called "broad arrow" engines, due to their shape resembling the British government broad arrow property mark. The most common W-type engine is the 4-bank type, with the Volkswagen Group experimenting with the Passat W8 and its 4.0 liter, 4-bank W8 engine and later implementing the concept with the group's Bentley division, creating a 6.0 liter W12 in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants. Renault Type W
The Renault 70 hp, (8Ab , 8C) is a French V-8 aero engine that first ran in 1910. The type powered many early military aircraft including the Farman MF.7 Longhorn and the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2. In addition to French production, these engines were also built in the United Kingdom and equipped the majority of British aircraft sent to France at the start of WW1. Design and development As with other Renault air cooled V-8s, the engine has an early form of reduction gearing where the propeller is fixed to the end of the camshaft and turns at half engine speed. This method of gearing allowed the engine and propeller to be run close to their optimum speeds without the additional weight penalty of a gearbox. In type theory, a system has inductive types if it has facilities for creating a new type from constants and functions that create terms of that type. The feature serves a role similar to data structures in a programming language and allows a type theory to add concepts like numbers, relations, and trees.
