Victor (also known as Desert Lake) is a ghost town in Castle Valley in northern Emery County, Utah, United States. Description The town was inhabited from 1910 to 1920. The community has the name of George W. Victor, a postal worker. History Victor was established in 1910, when a burst dam treated the soil near Desert Lake with alkaline water, preventing farming. Residents of Desert Lake, a town located near the lake, had to relocate to a more fertile area in order to continue farming. They chose a spot east of Elmo. The town was soon named Victor. Homes and a schoolhouse were built in town. Farming was more difficult at Victor, because the area was much drier than Desert Lake. Victor is a village located within the Town of Victor in Ontario County, New York, United States. The population was 2,696 at the 2010 census. The Village of Victor is in the southeast part of the town and is southeast of the City of Rochester. Victor is a census-designated place (CDP) in Ravalli County, Montana, United States. The population was 745 at the 2010 census. History Victor is named for Chief Victor of the Bitterroot Salish, whose proper name was Xweɫxƛ̣ ̓cín (Many Horses). Chief Victor met Lewis and Clark when he was 15 years old in September 1805 at Ross' Hole and later he would refuse to cede the Bitterroot Valley to the United States' Washington Territory. After Chief Victor's death in 1870, the Salish were forced to move to the Flathead Reservation. The townsite was platted in 1881. Repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893 hit Victor hard, forcing many of the local mines to close. Victor is a town in Poweshiek and Iowa counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 875 in the 2020 census, a decline from the population of 952 in 2000. History Victor was laid out in the 1860s. The town was originally called Wilson, after George W. Wilson, who owned the town site. In 1872, the Moravian Church organized a mission in Victor for German-speaking settlers, and nearby organized another mission known as North English, naming this congregation after the nearby English River).
