Volcanic Passive Margin
Volcanic passive margins (VPM) and Non-Volcanic Passive Margins, non-volcanic passive margins are the two forms of transitional crust (geology), crust that lie beneath passive margin, passive continental margins that occur on Earth as the result of the formation of Oceanic basin, ocean basins via continental rifting. Initiation of igneous processes associated with volcanic passive margins occurs before and/or during the rifting process depending on the cause of rifting. There are two accepted models for VPM formation: Hotspot (geology), hotspots/mantle plumes and Plate tectonics#Gravitation, slab pull. Both result in large, quick lava flows over a relatively short period of Geologic time scale, geologic time (i.e. a couple of million years). Passive Margin
A passive margin is the transition between Lithosphere#Oceanic lithosphere, oceanic and Lithosphere#Continental lithosphere, continental lithosphere that is not an active plate continental margin, margin. A passive margin forms by sedimentation above an ancient rift, now marked by transitional lithosphere. Continental rifting forms new ocean basins. In geology, a sill is a tabular sheet intrusion that has intruded between older layers of sedimentary rock, beds of volcanic lava or tuff, or along the direction of foliation in metamorphic rock. Volcaniclastic
Volcaniclastics are geologic materials composed of broken fragments (clasts) of volcanic rock. These encompass all clastic volcanic materials, regardless of what process fragmented the rock, how it was subsequently transported, what environment it was deposited in, or whether nonvolcanic material is mingled with the volcanic clasts.
