The University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center is a cancer research and treatment institution based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States. The Rogel Cancer Center is affiliated with the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine. History The Rogel Cancer Center was founded in 1986 at the University of Michigan. In 1988, it was designated as part of the National Cancer Institute cancer centers program. It received comprehensive cancer center status in 1991 and continues to be an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center today. From 1991-2018 it was known as the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. The center was renamed the Rogel Cancer Center in 2018 in recognition of a $150 million commitment from Richard and Susan Rogel. Theodore Lawrence
Theodore Steven Lawrence is an American radiation oncologist. In 2015, Lawrence was appointed the director of the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. Early life and education Lawrence was born in Queens, New York but raised in Port Washington, New York on Long Island. After graduating from Paul D. Schreiber Senior High School Lawrence enrolled at Rockefeller University for his PhD and Cornell University for his medical degree. With his medical degree, Lawrence then completed his residency in internal medicine at Stanford University and National Cancer Institute. Graft-versus-host Disease
Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a syndrome, characterized by inflammation in different organs. GvHD is commonly associated with bone marrow transplants and stem cell transplants. White blood cells of the donor's immune system which remain within the donated tissue (the graft) recognize the recipient (the host) as foreign (non-self). The white blood cells present within the transplanted tissue then attack the recipient's body's cells, which leads to GvHD. This should not be confused with a transplant rejection, which occurs when the immune system of the transplant recipient rejects the transplanted tissue; GvHD occurs when the donor's immune system's white blood cells reject the recipient. Reshma Jagsi (born April 28, 1974) is an American Radiation oncologist. She is the Lawrence W. Davis Professor and Chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Senior Faculty Fellow in the Center for Ethics at Emory University.
