The University of Alberta Students' Union (UASU) is the student society that represents undergraduate students at the University of Alberta. Originally established in 1909, it is a non-profit corporation that operates under the authority of the Post-Secondary Learning Act (Alberta). Its membership consists of the roughly 31,000 undergraduate students enrolled at the university. With an annual budget of more than $10,000,000 and hundreds of paid and volunteer staff, the Students' Union serves as an advocate for students and provides a variety of services to its members. The Students' Union also operates a number of businesses, manages various targeted trust funds, hosts a wide variety of entertainment and educational events, and runs the Students' Union Building. 1940 Canadian Federal Election
The 1940 Canadian federal election was held March 26, 1940, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 19th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal Party was re-elected to their second consecutive majority government. The election was overshadowed by the Second World War, which caused many Canadians to rally around the government. In response to this, the Conservative Party of Robert Manion ran on a platform advocating the creation of an all-party national unity government and ran under the name " National Government" in this election. Though Manion was personally opposed to conscription, the Liberals faced intense pressure in Quebec on the question and promised not to institute the measure. Edmonton-Glenora is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, Canada. It is located north of the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton. The electoral district, as defined by the ''Electoral Divisions Act, 2003,'' encompasses an area that includes, in addition to the neighbourhood of Glenora, the neighbourhoods of Britannia Youngstown, Canora, Grovenor, High Park, Inglewood, Mayfield, McQueen, North Glenora, Westmount and Woodcroft as well. Edmonton West stylized as Edmonton (West) from 1917 to 1921, was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1917 to 1921 and again from 1963 to 1971. History The riding has existed twice, the first incarnation was created in 1917 when the Edmonton electoral district broke up into Edmonton East and Edmonton West electoral districts. Lou Hyndman
Louis Davies Hyndman, (July 1, 1935 – November 24, 2013) was a Canadian lawyer and politician from Alberta. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for 19 years and was a member of Premier Peter Lougheed and Don Getty's Cabinets. Hyndman was named the 15th Chancellor of the University of Alberta on June 10, 1994. From 1993 through 1996, he was Honorary Captain of the 4th Destroyer Squadron, Royal Canadian Navy. Early life Louis Davies Hyndman was born in Edmonton, Alberta on July 1, 1935 to Louis Davis Hyndman Sr., Q.C. and Muriel MacKintosh. Edgar Peter Lougheed ( ; July 26, 1928 – September 13, 2012) was a Canadian lawyer and Progressive Conservative politician who served as the tenth premier of Alberta from 1971 to 1985, presiding over a period of reform and economic growth. Gerard Joseph Taets van Amerongen (July 18, 1914 – April 21, 2013) was a politician and lawyer from Alberta, Canada. He was born in 1914 in WinnipegPerry, Footz (2006) 381 and grew up in Edmonton. He graduated in law from the University of Alberta. He first ran for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the 1955 provincial election, as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the Edmonton district. He finished 18th on the first ballot and was eliminated in transfers. He ran in the next three provincial general elections in various districts and was defeated each time. He was first elected in the 1971 provincial election in the district of Edmonton-Meadowlark. He was appointed Speaker and held that position until 1986 when he was defeated in his riding by Grant Mitchell, who later became leader of the Alberta Liberal Party.
