Uganda has competed at both the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games. The country made its Paralympic début at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, Germany, where it sent two male athletes to compete in javelin and shot put. It competed again in 1976, with a single athlete in the men's javelin, then ceased to compete in the Summer Games until 1996, when it fielded a single male competitor in powerlifting. Since then, Uganda has taken part in every edition of the Summer Paralympic Games, although it had only one representative in 2000 (women's swimming), two in 2004 (women's athletics and men's powerlifting), and one in 2008 (men's powerlifting). Athletics at the 2020 Summer Paralympics were held in the National Stadium in Tokyo. There was 167 medal events: 93 for men, 73 for women and one mixed event. It was the largest contest of the Games programme regarding athlete numbers and medal events to be scheduled. Christine Akullo
Christine Akullo (born 23 June 1990) is a Ugandan Paralympic athlete competing in the T13 Category. Akullo won Gold for Uganda in the T13 100m at the 2011 All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique as well as the 2015 All Africa Games. She was also Uganda's flag bearer at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Background and education Akullo was in Aboke, Soroti District, Uganda to Joseph Ayom and Jennet Rose Agiro. After contracting malaria in 1998, she became partially blind. Between 1996 and 2004, she received her early education at Namatala Primary School in Mbale District. She later joined St Francis Madera School for the Blind in Soroti in 2006 and completed her A-Level in 2011. Locally she is sponsored by Child Fund International and it was reported that she would be joining Makerere University in September 2012 to pursue a bachelor's degree in Sports Science.
