The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is a public land-grant research university in Paradise, Nevada. The campus is about east of the Las Vegas Strip. It was formerly part of the University of Nevada from 1957 to 1969. It includes the Shadow Lane Campus, just east of the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, which houses both School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine. UNLV's law school, the William S. Boyd School of Law, is the only law school in the state. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". According to the National Science Foundation, UNLV spent $83 million on research and development in 2018, ranking it 165th in the nation. UNLV Rebels
The UNLV Rebels are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The Rebels compete in the NCAA Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision for college football) as a member of the Mountain West Conference. The school's colors are scarlet and gray. It was founded in 1958 for basketball in Paradise, Nevada. It did not have a nickname for Nevada Southern at the time from 1958 to 1968. Some of the Rebels teams use variations of the team name for their individual sport, such as the Runnin' Rebels for men's basketball and the Hustlin' Rebels for the baseball team. The 1990 Runnin' Rebels basketball team defeated Duke University 103–73, to win the NCAA National Championship, UNLV's first Division I National Championship in one of the three major sports. Jerry Tarkanian
Jerry Tarkanian (August 8, 1930 – February 11, 2015) was an American basketball coach. He coached college basketball for 31 seasons over five decades at three schools. He spent the majority of his career coaching with the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, leading them four times to the Final Four of the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, winning the national championship in 1990. Tarkanian revolutionized the college game at UNLV, utilizing a pressing defense to fuel its fast-paced offense. Overall, he won over 700 games in his college coaching career, only twice failing to win 20 games, while never having a losing season. Tarkanian was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), is an academic division of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) with 60 students matriculated on July 17, 2017. The students began their education with a 6 week EMT course. The school is the first to grant the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in Southern Nevada. Mountain West Conference
The Mountain West Conference (MW) is one of the collegiate athletic conferences affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) (formerly I-A). The MW officially began operations on January 4, 1999. Geographically, the MW covers a broad expanse of the Western United States, with member schools located in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Hey Reb!
Hey Reb! was a mascot for the UNLV Rebels, the athletic teams of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada, USA. He performed live at all UNLV athletic events. The mascot, Hey Reb!, was first created in 1983 to depict the embodiment of an independent, rebel spirit at UNLV athletic events, intended as a tribute to western settlers. In the aftermath of the George Floyd protests, the statue of the mascot was removed due to concerns of racist symbolism, and the mascot itself was permanently retired for similar reasons, with no replacement mascot announced. Previous mascots UNLV's original mascot was a Confederate uniform-wearing wolf named Beauregard. Dressed in a grey uniform, Beauregard was a variation on the Confederate symbolic image of "Johnny Reb". The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A, is the highest level of college football in the United States. Maude Frazier (April 4, 1881 – June 20, 1963) was an American politician. She was the first female Lieutenant Governor of Nevada. Before entering politics, Frazier was a teacher, principal and school superintendent. She was a member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party Frazier served in the Nevada Assembly from her first election in 1950 until 1962, when she was appointed Lieutenant Governor by Gov.
