UK Drill
UK drill is a subgenre of drill music and road rap that originated in the South London district of Brixton from 2012 onwards. Initially borrowing heavily from the style of Chicago drill music before creating its own unique sound, UK drill artists often rap about violent and hedonistic criminal lifestyles. Typically, those who create this style of music are affiliated with gangs or come from socioeconomically-deprived neighbourhoods where crime is a way of life for many. UK drill music is closely related to road rap, a British style of gangsta rap that became popular in the years prior to the existence of drill. UK drill often exhibits violent language and provocative lyrics, resulting in the genre being cited as a reason for an increase in knife crime in London. British Hip Hop
British hip hop, also known as UK hip hop or UK rap, is a genre of music, and a culture that covers a variety of styles of hip hop music made in the United Kingdom. It is generally classified as one of a number of styles of R&B/Hip-Hop. British hip hop can also be referred to as Brit-hop, a term coined and popularised mainly by '' British Vogue'' magazine and the BBC. British hip hop was originally influenced by the dub/toasting introduced to the United Kingdom by Jamaican migrants in the 1950s–70s, who eventually developed uniquely influenced rapping (or speed-toasting) in order to match the rhythm of the ever-increasing pace and aggression of Jamaican-influenced dub in the UK. Toasting and soundsystem cultures were also influential in genres outside of hip hop that still included rapping – such as grime, jungle, and UK garage. Jammer (musician)
Jahmek Power (born 3 June 1982), better known by his stage name Jammer, is a British grime MC, rapper, songwriter and record producer, known for being a member of Boy Better Know and a former member of N.A.S.T.Y Crew. Jammer also runs Lord of the Mics, a grime clash series released on DVD and well known in grime. Biography Jammer was a member of the East London group N.A.S.T.Y Crew from 2000, and released a single under his own name, "Take U Out", in 2003 before departing from the group. He signed with Big Dada Recordings and released his first full-length, ''Jahmanji'', in May 2010. CGM (an acronym for Cherish God More), is a British hip hop collective based in Ladbroke Grove, London. They were formerly known as 1011, named after the W10 and W11 postal codes. They are considered to be one of the pioneers of the UK drill scene. History In 2015, Digga D formed the UK drill group 1011 along with his friends in a local youth club in Ladbroke Grove. Harlem Spartans
Harlem Spartans, often abbreviated to HS, also known as Harlem O or simply Harlem, is a British hip hop collective based in Kennington, London. Members of Harlem Spartans have acquired over 100 million streams through their music. The name, "Harlem", is a nickname for their local area of Kennington. The police allege that Harlem Spartans is a gang, however this is denied by the group. Harlem Spartans is affiliated with Walworth-based group Moscow17. Australian drill group Onefour cites Harlem Spartans as a major influence in their music. They are considered to be one of the pioneers of the UK drill scene. Form 696
Form 696 was a risk assessment form used by the London Metropolitan Police from 2008 to 2017, which requested promoters and licensees of events to complete and submit 14 days in advance of an event in 21 London boroughs. Non-compliance with this could result in police opposition to event licences being granted. This form became controversial due to its stipulation that names, stage names, private addresses, and phone numbers of all promoters, DJs and artists be listed. The form also asked for a description of the style of music to be performed and the target audience. The original form asked for details of ethnic groups likely to attend the performance, but that version was revised to omit those parameters in December 2008. Nathaniel Thompson (born 11 May 1983), better known professionally as Giggs, is a British rapper and songwriter from Peckham, London. Cassiel Wuta-Ofei (born 9 April 1992), known professionally as LD or Scribz, is a British rapper. Named as the "godfather of UK drill" and as a founding member of the UK drill scene, LD would rise to fame in 2014 with the release of his debut single "Live Corn" and the release of "Let's Lurk" alongside 67 in 2016, which would feature Giggs. Angell Town
Angell Town is an area in Brixton, in the London Borough of Lambeth, south London. The area is dominated by the Angell Town Estate, a housing estate known for its poverty, deprivation and gang subculture. The Angell Town Estate was originally built in the 1970s as a set of blocks linked by a deck-access system. Following the efforts of local resident and community leader Dora Boatemah, the estate was extensively redeveloped in the early 2000s in an attempt to remove the architectural problems that had exacerbated the estate's social problems.
