ULFA
The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is an armed separatist insurgent organisation, that operates in the Indian state of Assam. It seeks to establish an independent sovereign nation state of Assam for the indigenous Assamese people through an armed struggle via the Assam conflict. The Government of India banned the organisation and designated it as an terrorist organisation in 1990, while the United States Department of State lists it under "other groups of concern". According to ULFA sources, it was founded on 7 April 1979 at Rang Ghar and began operations in 1990. Sunil Nath, former Central Publicity Secretary and spokesman of ULFA has stated that the organisation established ties with the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland in 1983 and with the Burma based Kachin Independent Army in 1987. Paresh Baruah
Paresh Baruah, also known by the alias Paresh Asom is an Assamese separatist militant who is the army chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), which is seeking Independence for Assam from the India, Indian Union. He is the vice-chairperson and the commander-in-chief of the United Liberation Front of Assam – Independent (ULFA – I). Baruah lives in Yunnan, China where he receives funding and patronage from the Chinese Ministry of State Security (China). He has also insisted that Han Chinese are friends of the Assamese and want to help them become independent, even though his influence has largely diminished. Arabinda Rajkhowa
Arabinda Rajkhowa (born Rajib Rajkonwar), alias Mijanur Rahman Choudhury, is the former chairman of ULFA and the current head of ULFA pro-talks faction under which signed a peace accord with the Centre and the Assam government in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma solve the problem of insurgency in the region. He is one of the founder members of the group. He was also the Vice-President of the Indo-Burma Revolutionary Front. Sashadhar Choudhury
Sashadhar Choudhury ( Assamese: শশধৰ চৌধুৰী) or Sasha Choudhury (real name Sailen Choudhury) is the Foreign Secretary of the outlawed group ULFA, Assam. His predecessor was Javed Bora. He hails from Helosa gaon in Nalbari district of Assam. He is married to Runima Choudhury and they have a daughter Shishir. Education Choudhury is a diploma in civil engineering and educated himself in diplomacy in Philippines. At times he represented ULFA at international foras including the UN. He is known to be the only English speaking ULFA who even interrupts his interrogators to correct their language. Chitrabon Hazarika () is the Finance Secretary of the banned group ULFA, Assam. He has also been holding the additional charge of general secretary since Anup Chetia’s arrest in 1997. A commerce graduate he hails from Jakhalabandha in Nagaon district of Assam. He is married to Pranati Deka, the arrested Cultural Secretary of the group. Arrest On Sunday night, 1 November 2009, some unidentified gunman took Hazarika, along with the group’s foreign secretary Sashadhar Choudhury away from a house in sector 3 of Uttara in Dhaka. Raju Baruah ( Assamese: (ৰাজু বৰুৱা) (real name Hitesh Kalita), alias Anees Ahmed, is the Deputy Commander-in-Chief, the Chief of military operations, military spokesperson and the head of the near-autonomous ' Enigma Force' of the banned outfit ULFA in Assam. Anup Chetia
Anup Chetia ( Assamese: অনুপ চেতিয়া) (real name Golap Baruah also known as Sunil Baruah, Bhaijan or Ahmed) is the General Secretary of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam in Assam. He is also one of the founder leaders of the group. He was born at Jerai Gaon in Tinsukia district of Assam. Arrest Chetia was first arrested in March, 1991 in Assam but was released by then Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia. Later on 21 December 1997 he was again arrested in Dhaka under the Foreigners Act and the Passports Act for illegally carrying foreign currencies and a satellite phone. He was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a Bangladeshi court and was being held at Kashimpur Jail in the outskirts of Dhaka. Pradip Gogoi (), alias Samiran Gogoi, is the Vice-Chairman of the outlawed outfit ULFA in Assam. He is also one of the founder members of the outfit. He was arrested in Kolkata by West Bengal Police on 8 April 1998 and put in judicial custody at Guwahati. A former electricity board employee Gogoi hails from Sibsagar district of Assam. Mithinga Daimary
Mithinga Daimary (alias Deepak Das) was the Central Publicity Secretary of the banned outfit ULFA since the previous publicity secretary Siddhartha Phukan's surrender in 1992. He was born in the Barama village in Nalbari district of Assam on 17 May 1967 with the birth name Deepak Kachari. Education Daimary joined B. Borooah College in Guwahati in 1986. But he could not complete his graduation since he joined ULFA in the same year and went underground. Later he became the Central Publicity Secretary of the outfit.
