Treaty Of New York (1790)
The Treaty of New York was a treaty signed in 1790 between leaders of the Muscogee and U.S. Secretary of War Henry Knox, who served in the presidential administration of George Washington. A failed 1789 attempt at a treaty between the United States and the Muscogee at Rock Landing, Georgia in 1789, was abruptly ended by Muscogee leader Alexander McGillivray, who described his grievances in a letter to the U.S. commissioners. Washington sent a special emissary, Marinus Willett, to McGillvray and persuaded him to come to New York City, which was the U.S. capital, to conduct a treaty with Washington and Knox directly. In the summer of 1790, twenty-seven Muscogee leaders, led by McGillivray, traveled to New York and signed a treaty on behalf of the "Upper, Middle, and Lower Creek and Seminole composing the Creek nation of Indians." Nonintercourse Act
The Nonintercourse Act (also known as the Indian Intercourse Act or the Indian Nonintercourse Act) is the collective name given to six statutes passed by the Congress in 1790, 1793, 1796, 1799, 1802, and 1834 to set Amerindian boundaries of reservations. The various Acts were also intended to regulate commerce between settlers and the natives. The most notable provisions of the Act regulate the inalienability of aboriginal title in the United States, a continuing source of litigation for almost 200 years. The prohibition on purchases of Indian lands without the approval of the federal government has its origins in the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and the Confederation Congress Proclamation of 1783.
