Torment (1944 Film)
''Torment'' ( sv, Hets) is a 1944 Swedish film, directed by Alf Sjöberg from a screenplay by Ingmar Bergman. The film, a tale of sex, passion and murder, was originally released as ''Frenzy'' in the United Kingdom, although later releases have used the US title. The film won the Grand Prix at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. Plot A sadistic Latin teacher, nicknamed "Caligula" by his long-suffering students, rules his classroom at a Stockholm school like his kingdom. He is exceptionally hard on the diligent Jan-Erik, one of his students. One night Jan-Erik is returning home and finds an intoxicated young woman crying on the street. He recognizes her as Bertha, the clerk in a tobacco store near the school, and he walks her home. Bertha has a taste for men and liquor, and Jan-Erik spends most of the night on her bedside. Alf Sjöberg
Sven Erik Alf Sjöberg (21 June 1903 – 17 April 1980) was a Swedish theatre and film director. He won the Grand Prix du Festival at the Cannes Film Festival twice: in 1946 for '' Torment'' ( sv, Hets) (part of an eleven-way tie), and in 1951 for his film ''Miss Julie'' ( sv, Fröken Julie) (an adaptation of August Strindberg's play which tied with Vittorio De Sica's ''Miracle in Milan''). Despite his success with those films, Sjöberg was foremost a stage director, perhaps the greatest at Dramaten (alongside first Olof Molander and later Ingmar Bergman). He was a First Director of Sweden's Royal Dramatic Theatre between 1930 and 1980; he staged there many remarkable and historic productions. Sjöberg was also a pioneer director of drama for early Swedish TV (his 1955 TV production of ''Hamlet'' is a national milestone). ''Aftonbladet'' (, lit. "The evening paper") is a Swedish daily newspaper published in Stockholm, Sweden. It is one of the largest daily newspapers in the Nordic countries. History and profile The newspaper was founded by Lars Johan Hierta in December 1830 under the name of ''Aftonbladet i Stockholm'' during the modernization of Sweden. Often critical and oppositional, the paper was repeatedly banned from publishing. However, Hierta circumvented the bans by constantly reviving the paper under slightly modified names, as, legally speaking, a new publication. Filmstaden
Filmstaden was a film studio situated in Råsunda, Solna Municipality in Stockholm, Sweden. History Filmstaden was once one of the most modern film studios in Europe. It was built in 1919–1920 on the basis of designs by Swedish architect Ebbe Crone (1885-1960). It was owned and operated by SF Studios (''Svensk Filmindustri''), the main Swedish film producer at the time. Some 400 movies have been created at Filmstaden. The first movie to be filmed at Filmstaden was ''The Phantom Carriage'' (''Körkarlen''. 1921) by director Victor Sjöström. Practically all Swedish actors and film directors of the 20th century had some connection with Filmstaden. Hasse Ekman (born Hans Gösta Ekman; 10September 191515February 2004) was a Swedish director, actor, writer and producer for film, stage and television. Biography Hasse Ekman is probably Sweden's most successful and critically acclaimed film director from the period after Sjöström and Stiller and prior to Ingmar Bergman, peaking between the mid-1940s and 1950. He was greatly influenced by filmmaker Orson Welles and also by episodic-films. Jan Molander
Jan Göran Gustaf Harald Molander (2 April 1920 – 30 June 2009) was a Swedish actor and film director who had a decades-long dominant career in his country's film and television industry. A native of Stockholm, Jan Molander was the son of actor/director Gustaf Molander and Elsa Fahlberg and the half-brother of director and producer Harald Molander from his father's first marriage to actress Karin Molander. From 1942 to 1945 he was a pupil at the Royal Dramatic Training Academy and made his film debut playing a student in 1944's critically acclaimed ''Hets'' ('' Torment''), directed by Alf Sjöberg and written by the film's assistant director Ingmar Bergman. He worked for Sveriges Radio and television in the 1950s and 60s as a director and was in charge of radioteatern adio theaterbetween 1969 and 1972.
