George Irving (American Actor)
George Henry Irving (October 5, 1874 – September 11, 1961) was an American film actor and director. Career Irving started his career as a theatre actor, notably as leading man to Maude Adams. He came to Hollywood in 1914 and acted in over 250 films from 1914 until 1948. Irving was initially an actor-director and directed about 35 silent films, which are mostly forgotten today. He switched exclusively to acting in the mid-1920s and became a character actor until the later 1940s. Irving usually played reputable and stern persons of authority in supporting roles. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Robert Wentworth in ''Coquette'' (1929), and as the lawyer Alexander Peabody in ''Bringing Up Baby'' (1938). He ended his prolific career with two television roles in the 1950s. Personal life George Irving and his wife, Katherine Gilman, had two daughters, Katharine and Dorothy. Theobald Von Bethmann-Hollweg
Theobald Theodor Friedrich Alfred von Bethmann Hollweg (29 November 1856 – 1 January 1921) was a German politician who was the chancellor of the German Empire from 1909 to 1917. He oversaw the German entry into World War I. According to biographer Konrad H. Jarausch, a primary concern for Bethmann in July 1914 was the steady growth of Russian power, and the growing closeness of the British and French military collaboration. Under these circumstances he decided to run what he considered a calculated risk to back Austria-Hungary in a local war against Serbia, while risking a major war with Russia. He calculated that France would not support Russia. This calculation proved to be mistaken when Russia decided on general mobilization. Karl Dane (born Rasmus Karl Therkelsen Gottlieb, 12 October 1886 – 14 April 1934) was a Danish-American comedian and actor known for his work in American films, mainly of the silent film era. He became a star after portraying “Slim”, a supporting role in one of the most successful silent films of all time, ''The Big Parade'' (1925), directed by King Vidor and starring John Gilbert. After signing with MGM in 1926, he appeared in supporting roles in several popular silent films before teaming up with George K. Arthur to form the successful comedy duo Dane & Arthur. They appeared in a number of very successful silent comedy features. When sound films arrived, they made short-subject comedies and toured in vaudeville. Frank Currier
Frank Currier (September 4, 1857 – April 22, 1928) was an American film and stage actor and director of the silent era. Career Similar to Theodore Roberts, Kate Lester, Ida Waterman, and William H. Crane, Currier had a long and successful stage career in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. His youth was spent honing his stagecraft. By the time he started appearing in silent films he was in his 50s and middle-aged. Currier, like Roberts, had a distinctive grandfatherly look as he aged and was respected and beloved by film audiences. Currier appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1928. He also directed 19 films in 1916. Earl O. Schenck (13 May 1889 – 1962) was an American film actor. He appeared in 41 films between 1916 and 1946. Olive Tell (September 27, 1894 – June 8, 1951) was a stage and screen actress from New York City. Biography Tell was educated in several cities in Europe. She and her younger actress sister Alma graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1915. The sisters began appearing in Broadway theaters around 1918. ''The Sinking of the Lusitania'' (1918) is an American silent animated short film by cartoonist Winsor McCay. It is a work of propaganda re-creating the never-photographed 1915 sinking of the British liner RMS ''Lusitania''. At twelve minutes it has been called the longest work of animation at the time of its release. The film is the earliest surviving animated documentary and serious, dramatic work of animation. The National Film Registry selected it for preservation in 2017. In 1915, a German submarine torpedoed and sank the RMS ''Lusitania''; 128 Americans were among the 1,198 dead.
