In 1938, he won a music contest in his native Cuba, called ''La Corte Suprema del Arte'' (The Supreme Court of Art). Shortly afterwards, he joined the ''Sevilla Biltmore Orquestra'' and in 1939, he began singing for '' Orquesta Riverside''. His breakthrough came with the hit " Vereda Tropical". In the 1970s, he was part of a group called ''Orquesta Jorrín'', led by Enrique Jorrín, inventor of the '' cha-cha-chá''. Orquesta Riverside
Orquesta Riverside (known as Orquesta Havana Riverside between 1938 and 1941) was a highly successful Cuban big band that was amongst the most popular ensembles of the 1940s and 1950s. Founded in 1938, it was originally directed by local musician until 1945. Other directors were Antonio Sosa (1945–47), Pedro Vila (1947–57), Adolfo Guzmán (1957–62), Argelio González and Nelson Arocha. In 1993, the ensemble disbanded after a long period lacking success. Years later, Raúl Nacianceno Miyares, a former saxophonist in the band, revived the name of the band with young music graduates, playing the same arrangements as 50 years ago. Enrique Jorrín
Enrique Jorrín ( Candelaria, Pinar del Río, December 25, 1926 - Havana, December 12, 1987) was a Cuban charanga violinist, composer and music director. He is considered the inventor of the '' cha-cha-chá'', a popular style of ballroom music derived from danzón. Biography At an early age, his family moved to the El Cerro neighborhood of Havana, where Jorrín was to live for the rest of his life. At the age of 12, he began to show a particular interest in music and decided to learn the violin. He then pursued musical studies at the Municipal Conservatory of Havana. He started out as a violinist in the orchestra of Cuba's National Institute of Music, under the direction of González Mántici. In 1941, he became a member of the '' danzonera'' Hermanos Contreras.
