Tom Murphy (artist)
Tom Murphy (born 1949) is an English artist who is best known for his bronze sculptures. Murphy is a self-taught artist, starting his artistic career initially as a hobby and moved quickly to an intense period of self-study, mastering a range of techniques in many art disciplines. Previously he worked in a number of occupations which included; a seaman, salesman, musician and impressionist in a pop group. Later he graduated as a teacher at Liverpool John Moores University and taught art at the Liverpool Community College. He also worked at a Centre for People with Learning Difficulties. His differing careers and interest in the characteristics of people have both acted as a rich source of inspiration in both his paintings and sculptures. His early experimenting in painting was finally appreciated when he won first prize in the BBC 'North West Art 88' competition. Thomas William Murphy (3 November 1863 – 26 July 1939) was a New Zealand boxer. An early World Featherweight Champion, he was the first world champion of any weightclass to come from New Zealand. In his early career, he took the New Zealand Lightweight Championship. He was a prolific boxer who fought more than two hundred fights, with a few going as long as thirty and forty rounds. Thomas James Murphy Jr. (born April 3, 1991) is an American professional baseball catcher for the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Colorado Rockies. Prior to playing professionally, Murphy played college baseball for the University at Buffalo. Amateur career Murphy attended Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square, New York, where he played for the school's baseball team. Thomas Christian Murphy (born August 27, 1979) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder. He played for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2006 and 2007. Career Murphy was a 1997 graduate of Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Florida. He is also an alumnus of Florida Atlantic University, where he played baseball for the Owls under head coach Kevin Cooney. Thomas Andrew Murphy (born December 30, 1945) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher. Early years While pitching at Ohio University, the nineteen year old was originally drafted by the Houston Astros in the 18th round of the 1965 Major League Baseball draft, but did not sign. A year later, the San Francisco Giants drafted Murphy in the fourth round of the secondary phase of the draft, but he again did not sign. Finally, when the California Angels selected him sixth overall in the January draft, he signed. Murphy hit the ground running in his first assignment in professional baseball with the Midwest League Quad Cities Angels. Thomas Murphy (born 19 March 1986) is a former Australian rules football player who played with the Hawthorn Football Club and Gold Coast Suns in the Australian Football League. Murphy was selected with the 21st pick in the 2004 AFL Draft and was a defender. He spent the bulk of his debut year with the Box Hill Hawks at Victorian Football League level, but broke into the Hawthorn side for the final game of the year. In 2006 he added a further seven games and kicked his first goal. Murphy played 18 games in 2008 and was listed as an emergency for the 2008 Grand Final. Thomas Sawyer Murphy (May 31, 1925 – May 25, 2022) was an American broadcasting executive, and was chair and chief executive officer of Capital Cities / ABC, Inc. until 1996. Together with fellow Capital Cities executive Daniel Burke, Murphy engineered the acquisition of the American Broadcasting Company in 1986 for $3.5 billion. Murphy and Burke, who served as president and chief executive of ABC until 1994, are credited with increasing the profitability and efficiency of ABC. Early life Murphy was born in Brooklyn on May 31, 1925.
