Thomas Davies (bookseller)
Thomas Davies (c. 1713 – 1785) was a Scottish bookseller and author. He studied at the University of Edinburgh, and was for some years on the stage, but having been ridiculed by Charles Churchill (satirist), Churchill in ''The Rosciad'', Davies gave up acting and opened a bookshop in Covent Garden. It was here that in 1763 he introduced James Boswell, Boswell to Samuel Johnson, Dr. Johnson, who was Davies' close friend, and to whom he dedicated his edition of the works of Philip Massinger, Massinger. Davies wrote a successful ''Life of David Garrick, Garrick'' (1780), which passed through four editions, and ''Dramatic Miscellanies'' (three volumes, 1783–84). Life He was born about 1713, and was educated at the University of Edinburgh (1728 and 1729). In 1736 he appeared in George Lillo's ''Fatal Curiosity'' at the Haymarket, then under Henry Fielding's management. He then tried bookselling, but failed and returned to the stage. Thomas Christopher Davies (born 18 April 1992) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for club Tranmere Rovers. Career Born in Warrington, England, Davies started his career with local junior side Grappenhall Juniors where he was spotted by Manchester United and Manchester City and invited for trials with both clubs. He subsequently signed for Manchester United as an eight-year-old, where he spent four years at the club as a youth player before he was released in 2005. Thomas Alfred Davies (December 3, 1809 – August 19, 1899) was an American businessman, engineer, and soldier. He served as a Brigadier general (United States), brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1866, he was nominated and confirmed for appointment to the grade of Brevet (military), brevet Major general (United States), major general of volunteers, to rank from July 11, 1865. After the war Davies was a successful realtor as well as an author. Early life and career Davies was born in 1809 near Black Lake (New York), Black Lake, located in St. Lawrence County, New York. Thomas Davies (British Army Officer)
Thomas Davies FRS FLS (c. 1737 – 16 March 1812) was a British Army officer, artist, and naturalist. He was born in Shooter's Hill (London), England and died 16 March 1812 in Blackheath (London). He rose to the rank of Lieutenant-general in the Royal Artillery. He studied drawing and recorded military operations in water-colours during several military campaigns in North America. He later became a noted artist and naturalist. He was the first to illustrate and describe the superb lyrebird. His work was not well known until after a 1953 auction from the Earl of Derby's library. His paintings were later shown as part of a major exhibition, 2 July – 4 September 1972, at the National Gallery of Canada. Early life Very little is known of his early life. Don Brewery
The Don Brewery (originally the Don Bridge Brewery, and later the Davies Brewery) was a brewery in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was one of the largest breweries in 19th century Toronto. It was located along the Don River in the Corktown neighbourhood of Toronto. History The brewery was founded in 1844 by William and Robert Parks as the Don Bridge Brewery. Thomas Davies, who had been running his own brewery, the Yonge Street Brewery, bought the brewery from the Parks in 1848. In 1868, Davies enlisted his son Thomas Jr. to manage the brewery, its name changed to Thomas Davies and Son. Thomas Sr. died not much later, leaving Thomas Jr. in charge. Thomas Glanville Davies (7 May 1920 – 16 December 1998) was a Welsh Middleweight boxer. Davies was Wales middleweight champion from 1943 until his retirement in 1949. He successfully defended his title on four occasions. Davies was considered a serious contender for the British Middleweight title, but a string of three fights against Vince Hawkins during 1944 robbed him of his chance of a title fight. Thomas J. Davies (October 14, 1896 – February 29, 1972) was an American football player and coach. He played as a halfback at the University of Pittsburgh and was a consensus All-American in 1918 and 1920. After retiring as a player, Davies worked as a football coach for the next 26 years, including stints at the University of Pennsylvania, Geneva College, Allegheny College, the University of Rochester, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, the University of Scranton, and Western Reserve University.
