Thirsk (UK Parliament Constituency)
Thirsk was a parliamentary borough in Yorkshire, represented in the English and later British House of Commons in 1295, and again from 1547. It was represented by two Members of Parliament until 1832, and by one member from 1832 to 1885, when the constituency was abolished and absorbed into the new Thirsk and Malton division of the North Riding of Yorkshire. The borough consisted of originally of the town of Old Thirsk, and included a population of only 1,378 at the 1831 census. The right to vote was restricted to the holders of burgage tenements, of which there were 50 in 1831. The Frankland family were the local landowners (in 1816 Sir Thomas owned 49 of the 50 burgage tenements), and in effect could nominate whoever they wanted as Members of Parliament; there was no contested election in Thirsk between 1715 and 1832. Thirsk and Malton is a constituency in North Yorkshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2015 by Kevin Hollinrake, a Conservative. History 2010-date Anne McIntosh, a Conservative, elected for Vale of York in 1997 then in Thirsk and Malton in 2010, having defeated fellow MP John Greenway in the selection, qualified as an advocate and worked for six years as political adviser to the European Democrats group in Brussels, then won election as an MEP for two terms, since 2010 she chaired the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee. South Kilvington
South Kilvington is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated just off the A19, about one mile north of Thirsk. History The village is mentioned in the ''Domesday Book'' as ''Cheluitun'' in the ''Yarlestre'' hundred. The entry refers to the area around North Kilvington that was owned by Earl Edwin at the time of the Norman invasion and then granted to the Crown. During the 13th century, the lands became the demesne of Roger de Mowbray and around 1637, after many lands had been divided, the lord of the manor was Sir Arthur Ingram. John Dawney (MP)
Sir John Dawney or Dawnay (d.1346/7) was the eldest son of Nicholas Dawney (d. shortly before 15 Sep 1333) of Mudford Terry, Somerset, and his wife, Elizabeth. John Dawney's younger brother, Thomas Dawney of Escrick, Yorkshire, married Elizabeth, the daughter of John Newton of Snaith, Yorkshire, and was ancestor of the Viscounts Downe. John Dawney served in King Edward III's expedition to Honfleur in 1346, and fought at the Battle of Crécy on 26 August 1346, for which he was made a knight banneret. He died shortly after the battle, in 1346/7. Dawney married Sybil Treverbyn, the daughter of Walter de Treverbyn of Treverbyn, Cornwall. Reginald Beseley
Reginald Beseley was one of two Members of the Parliament of England for the borough of Scarborough in 1545, 1547, the November session of 1554 and in 1559. He also represented the borough of Thirsk in the March session of 1553 and the April session of 1554, as well as the borough of Knaresborough in the October session of 1553 and also the constituency of York in 1555. He is noted as being a tenant on lands belonging to Furness Abbey in 1530 and a number of letters verify his profession as a lawyer in 1533, 1534 and 1548.
