Stony Brook University (SBU), officially the State University of New York at Stony Brook, is a public research university in Stony Brook, New York. Along with the University at Buffalo, it is one of the State University of New York system's two flagship institutions. Its campus consists of 213 buildings on over of land in Suffolk County and it is the largest public university (by area) in the state of New York. Opened in 1957 in Oyster Bay as the State University College on Long Island, the institution moved to Stony Brook in 1962. ''The Statesman'' is the official student newspaper of Stony Brook University. Founded in 1957 as ''The Sucolian'', it is the longest-running student publication of the university and a print edition was published every Monday of the academic year until 2021. The paper is owned by Statesman Association Inc. and is staffed by undergraduate students, who work as editorial board members, writers, multimedia staff, social media team members or web designers, among other roles. Oyster Bay is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County in the state of New York, United States. The hamlet is also the site of a station on the Oyster Bay Branch of the Long Island Rail Road and the eastern termination point of that branch of the railroad.
