''The Sources of English Law'' (as it is sometimes known) is an essay written by the German historian Heinrich Brunner and translated by others. Editions, reprints and translations This essay was published under the title Ueberblick über die Geschichte der französischen, normannischen, und englischen Rechtsquellen in 1877 in the third edition of '' Encyclopädie der Rechtwissenschaft'', by Franz von Holtzendorf, at pages 229 to 267, as Part II, section 4. Heinrich Brunner
Heinrich Brunner ( en, Henry Brunner; 21 June 1840 – 11 August 1915) was a German historian. Life Brunner was born at Wels in Upper Austria. After studying at the universities of Vienna, Göttingen and Berlin, he became professor at the University of Lemberg in 1866, and in quick succession held similar positions at Prague, Strasbourg and Berlin. From 1872 Brunner devoted himself especially to studying the early laws and institutions of the Franks and other antique peoples of Western Europe. He also became a leading authority on modern German law. He became a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1884, and in 1887, after the death of Georg Waitz, undertook the supervision of the ''Leges'' section of the '' Monumenta Germaniae Historica'' (MGH). Brunner stayed with the MGH until his death in 1915. ''The English Historical Review'' is a bimonthly peer-reviewed academic journal that was established in 1886 and published by Oxford University Press (formerly Longman). It publishes articles on all aspects of history – British, European, and world history – since the classical era. It is the oldest surviving English language academic journal in the discipline of history. Six issues are published each year, and typically include four articles from a broad chronological range (roughly, medieval, early modern, modern and twentieth century) and around sixty book reviews. Review Articles are commissioned by the editors. A summary of international periodical literature published in the previous twelve months is also provided, and an annual summary of editions, reference works and other materials of interest to scholars is also produced. Ernst Freund
Ernst Freund (born January 30, 1864 in New York City – died October 20, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois) was a noted American legal scholar. He received a Dr. Jur. from the University of Heidelberg (1884) and a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University (1897). He was professor of political science at the University of Chicago (1894–1902) and then professor of law at Chicago (1903–1932), serving as the John P. Wilson Professor of Law (1929–1932). Freund was principally responsible for the development of administrative law in the United States during the early twentieth century. He was one of the organizers of the Immigrants' Protective League (1908). The University of Chicago Law School has established the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professorship of Law and Ethics in his honor, a seat currently held by philosopher Martha Nussbaum.
