The Song Of The Flame (film)
''Song of the Flame'' is a 1930 American pre-Code musical film photographed entirely in Technicolor. It was produced and distributed by First National Pictures. It was the first color film to feature a widescreen sequence, using a process called Vitascope, the trademark name for Warner Bros.' widescreen process. The film, based on the 1925 Broadway musical of the same name, was nominated for an Academy Award for Sound Recording ( George Groves). It is part of the tradition of operetta films, popular at the time. Plot Aniuta (Bernice Claire), known as ''The Flame'', is a peasant girl who incites the people against the Czarist regime and the aristocracy through singing. Alan Crosland
Alan Crosland (August 10, 1894 – July 16, 1936) was an American stage actor and film director. He is noted for having directed the first feature film using spoken dialogue, '' The Jazz Singer'' (1927). Early life and career Born in New York City, New York to a well-to-do Jewish family, Crosland attended Dartmouth College. After graduation, he took a job as a writer with the ''New York Globe'' magazine. Interested in the theatre, he began acting on stage, appearing in several productions with Shakespearian actress Annie Russell. Crosland began his career in the motion picture industry in 1912 at Edison Studios in The Bronx, New York, where he worked at various jobs for two years until he had learned the business sufficiently well to begin directing short films. The Booze Hangs High
''The Booze Hangs High'', released in December 1930, is the fourth title in the ''Looney Tunes'' series. The short features Bosko, Warner Bros.' first cartoon character. Plot The scene opens with a close up shot of a cow's rear end. She moos as she walks away, tail and udders swaying in time to ''Turkey in the Straw''. Bosko appears and does a Mexican style dance with the cow. At one point, the cow's "pants" drop, revealing polka-dotted underwear. Bosko points at it and laughs, at which the cow pulls her pants back on and walks off in a huff—with her nose up and tail held erect. Next, Bosko laughs heartily at a horse and the horse laughs back. He then climbs onto the horse carriage and uses a whip to play the horse's tail like a violin. He "tunes" the horse by twisting his ear. Bosko
Bosko is an animated cartoon character created by animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising. Bosko was the first recurring character in Leon Schlesinger's cartoon series and was the star of 39 ''Looney Tunes'' shorts released by Warner Bros. He was voiced by Carman Maxwell, Johnny Murray, and Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas during the 1920s and 1930s and once by Don Messick during the 1990s. Ivan Linow (born Jānis Linaus; November 21, 1888 – November 11, 1940), also known as Jack Linow, was a Latvian-born American wrestler, who became a character actor in American films during the silent and early sound film eras. Inez Courtney (October 12, 1897 – April 5, 1975) was an American actress on the Broadway stage and in films. Early years Born in Amsterdam, New York, Courtney came from a large Irish-American family. Alice Gentle (June 30, 1885 – February 28, 1958) was an American operatic mezzo-soprano. Operetta Film
Operetta films (German: Operettenfilm) are a genre of musical films associated with, but not exclusive to, German language cinema. The genre began in the late 1920s, but its roots stretch back into the tradition of nineteenth century Viennese operettas. Although some silent films had based their plots on stage operettas, the genre was largely a result of the switch from silent to sound films. The 1929 film '' Melody of the Heart'', made by the German studio UFA, is credited as being the first "Operetta film".
