''The Personals'' is a 1998 Taiwanese comedy-drama film directed and co-written by Chen Kuo-fu, based on Jade Y. Chen's 1992 novel of the same name. The film follows a career woman ( Rene Liu) as she encounters a diverse bunch of men after placing a personal advertisement in the newspaper. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. Liu won Best Actress at the 1999 Asia-Pacific Film Festival. Chen Kuo-fu
Chen Kuo-fu (born 13 May 1958) is a Taiwanese film director, screenwriter and producer. His film '' The Personals'' was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. Biography Born in 1958 Chen worked as a film critic before debuting as a director in 1989 with ''School Girl''. In the 1990s, he continued to explore the female perspective with ''Treasure Island'', ''The Peony Pavilion'' (inspired by traditional drama of the same name) and anti-romantic comedy '' The Personals''. The latter, in which a single woman searches for Mr. Right on a series of blind dates, screened in Cannes' Un Certain Regard sidebar and was distributed in Asia, Europe and North America. Wu Chun-lin (; born 14 January 1968), better known by his stage name Wu Bai (), is a Taiwanese rock singer, songwriter and actor. Doze Niu (, also known as Niu Chen-zer; born June 22, 1966) is a Taiwanese actor, film director, show host, screenwriter, and producer. As a film director, he is best known for the Taiwanese film '' Monga''. Early life Niu was born in Taipei, Taiwan on June 22, 1966. He grew up in the military dependents' village in Gongguan, Taipei. His father's family is from the Manchu Niohuru clan and his mother's family has military background. His grandfather was a general, so he would often accompany him to visit Chiang Kai-shek. When he was 12, his father was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and became bed-ridden for 25 years until his death. His love for Hong Kong cinema may have influenced his later works.
