The Mystical Marriage Of St Catherine (Parmigianino, National Gallery)
''The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine'' is a c.1529 oil on panel painting of the mystical marriage of Saint Catherine by Parmigianino, now in the National Gallery, London, who acquired it in 1974. It was engraved by Giulio Bonasone. Provenance Vasari wrote of a "Madonna seen from the side, in a fair pose, with several other figures" made by Parmigianino for a saddler friend of his in Bologna. That work was first linked to the London work in 1784, though some art historians date it a few years earlier during the artist's time in Rome, which ended with the Sack of Rome in 1527. The London work is first recorded in inventories of the Galleria Borghese in 1693 and 1750. In 1800 it was acquired by William Young Ottley, from whom it passed to the Earl of Normanton's collection at Somerley House. Parmigianino
Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola (11 January 150324 August 1540), also known as Francesco Mazzola or, more commonly, as Parmigianino (, , ; "the little one from Parma"), was an Italian Mannerist painter and printmaker active in Florence, Rome, Bologna, and his native city of Parma. His work is characterized by a "refined sensuality" and often elongation of forms and includes '' Vision of Saint Jerome'' (1527) and the iconic if somewhat anomalous '' Madonna with the Long Neck'' (1534), and he remains the best known artist of the first generation whose whole careers fall into the Mannerist period. His prodigious and individual talent has always been recognised, but his career was disrupted by war, especially the Sack of Rome in 1527, three years after he moved there, and then ended by his death at only 37. The National Art Gallery of Bologna (''Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna'') is a museum in Bologna, Italy. The Palazzo Davìa Bargellini is a Baroque style palace located on Strada Maggiore in central Bologna, Italy. It presently hosts the Civic Museum of Industrial art and Davìa Bargellini Gallery, which is an eclectic collection of paintings as well as applied arts and functional ornamentation, described as ''curiosities of the old Bologna''. The diverse applied art collection includes ceramics, liturgical robes, keys, ornamental door knobs, marionettes from street theaters, furniture, iron grille work, elaborately carved wooden frame, and a gilded carriage. Apsley House
Apsley House is the London townhouse of the Dukes of Wellington. It stands alone at Hyde Park Corner, on the south-east corner of Hyde Park, facing south towards the busy traffic roundabout in the centre of which stands the Wellington Arch. It is a Grade I listed building. It is sometimes referred to as the Wellington Museum, its official designation under a 1947 Act of Parliament. The house is now run by English Heritage and is open to the public as a museum and art gallery, exhibiting the Wellington Collection, a large collection of paintings, other artworks and memorabilia of the career of the 1st Duke.
