The Man Beyond The Bridge
''Paltadacho Munis'' or ''The Man Beyond the Bridge'' is an Indian film in Konkani directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar. Set in Goa, the film is about a recently widowed forest ranger in a dwindling forest, who strikes up an unlikely relationship with a woman he finds lost and alone in the woods. The film tries to destigmatise mental illness, often equated with being possessed by the devil in rural India. The film was premiered at 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI Prize) for Discovery. It was chosen as opening film of the Indian Panorama section at the 40th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2009. Laxmikant Shetgaonkar
Laxmikant Shetgaonkar is an Indian film director and screenwriter from the coastal state of Goa. He is best known for his critically acclaimed Konkani films, ''Paltadacho Munis'' and ''Baga Beach''. Early life Shetgaonkar was born in Cuncolim, Salcete. While in Delhi, he developed a love for films after attending many film festivals. Career Shetgaonkar's career began as an assistant director and screenplay writer in Mumbai. His first film was ''Eka Sagar Kinaree'' (''A Seaside Story''), which won him a Golden Conch in the Best Fiction category at the Mumbai International Film Festival. Konkani-language Films
Konkani () is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Konkani people, primarily in the Konkan region, along the western coast of India. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian Constitution, and the official language of the Indian state of Goa. It is a minority language in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat & Damaon, Diu & Silvassa. Konkani is a member of the Southern Indo-Aryan language group. Baga Beach (film)
''Baga Beach'' is 2013 Indian Konkani-language film written and directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar. It followed his critically acclaimed ''Paltadacho Munis'' (2009). Set in the eponymous Baga Beach in Goa, it was made at a budget of crore, making it the most expensive film yet of Konkani cinema. The film deals with the underbelly of tourism in Goa, with issues of paedophilia and child sexual abuse, conflict between locals and immigrants leading to hostility towards migrant laborers, impact of holidaying foreigners on local culture. The film had an Indian, German and French cast, including Bengali actress Paoli Dam, who spoke Hindi in the film. It was shot in Goa with an handheld camera in sync sound.
