''The Mafia Only Kills in Summer'' () is an Italian 2016 television series written by Pif, directed by Luca Ribuoli, produced and broadcast by RAI. Based on the homonym 2013 film, also directed by Pif, it was first aired on Rai 1 from 21 November to 20 December 2016. In the United Kingdom the series was broadcast by Channel 4. Plot The voice-over narrator of the whole series is an adult Salvatore Giammarresi ( Pif), a 10-year-old boy ( Edoardo Buscetta) that tells the story of an ordinary family of Palermo, his one, in the late 1970s. The ordinary events, viewed from the kid's point of view, are mixed with the historical facts, regarding the Sicilian Mafia (''Cosa Nostra''), which characterized the city in that period. ''The Mafia Kills Only in Summer'' ( it, La mafia uccide solo d'estate) is a 2013 Italian comedy-drama film. It marked the directorial debut of the TV satirist Pif. The Italian Senate President and former anti-mafia magistrate Pietro Grasso referred to this film as the best film work on Sicilian Mafia ever made. The film premiered at the 2013 Torino Film Festival and released to theatres in Italy on 28 November 2013. It was awarded best comedy film at the 27th European Film Awards. Plot The story takes place in Palermo and it follows the story of the young Arturo Giammarresi, who wishes to become a journalist and has loved Flora since he was ten years old. Vito Alfio Ciancimino (; 2 April 1924 – 19 November 2002) was an Italian politician close to the Mafia leadership who became known for enriching himself and his associates by corruptly granting planning permission. An abrasive personality, he served briefly as mayor of Palermo, Sicily as a Christian Democrat. Ciancimino was close to Mafia boss and perennial fugitive Bernardo Provenzano, but regarded Salvatore Riina as irrational. Mario Francese (; 6 February 1925 – 26 January 1979) was an Italian crime reporter of the ''Giornale di Sicilia''. He was the first journalist to expose the role of Toto Riina and the Corleonesi within the Sicilian Mafia, and because of this he was killed on 26 January 1979. After 22 years, in 2001, those who had decided to eliminate him were convicted. Early years Born in Syracuse, Sicily, he moved to Palermo to finish school.
