The Best In Mystery
''The Best in Mystery'' is an American anthology and mystery television series that ran for three years as a summer replacement series for the crime drama '' The Big Story''. The series aired on NBC from July 16, 1954, to September 3, 1954, presenting eight episodes on Friday nights from 9 to 9:30 p.m., from July 1955 to September 1955, and from July 13, 1956, to August 31, 1956. The 1955 broadcasts featured MCA-TV productions, most of which had been broadcast on ''The Pepsi-Cola Playhouse'' or '' Studio 57''. Episodes aired in 1956 featured Dick Powell as Willie Dante, owner of the San Francisco night club Dante's Inferno. They were first broadcast as part of ''Four Star Playhouse'' on CBS. The program was sponsored on alternate weeks by Simoniz and American Tobacco Company, with American Tobacco and the Toni Company alternating in 1956. Anthology Series
An anthology series is a radio, television, video game or film series that spans different genres and presents a different story and a different set of characters in each different episode, season, segment, or short. These usually have a different cast in each episode, but several series in the past, such as '' Four Star Playhouse'', employed a permanent troupe of character actors who would appear in a different drama each week. Some anthology series, such as '' Studio One'', began on radio and then expanded to television. Lloyd Corrigan
Lloyd Corrigan (October 16, 1900 – November 5, 1969) was an American film and television actor, producer, screenwriter, and director who began working in films in the 1920s. The son of actress Lillian Elliott, Corrigan directed films, usually mysteries such as '' Daughter of the Dragon'' starring Anna May Wong (one of a trilogy of Fu Manchu movies for which he has writing credits), before dedicating himself more to acting in 1938. His short '' La Cucaracha'' won an Academy Award in 1935. Marilyn Erskine
Marilyn Erskine (born April 24, 1926) is an American actress who started performing at the age of three on radio, and has since appeared in radio, theater, film and television roles from the 1920s through the 1970s. Personal life Erskine was born in Rochester, New York on April 24, 1926, and starred in movies from early childhood. Erskine married Hollywood producer and director Stanley Kramer in May 1945. The marriage was annulled two months later. She later remarried, to insurance executive Charles Curland in 1955, and had two children. Kim Spalding (born Ross F. Latimer; December 7, 1915 – November 18, 2000) was an American film, television and theatre actor. Life and career Spalding was born in Washington, Missouri, the son of Ross Latimer. He began his film career in 1940 with an appearance in the film ''Rancho Grande''. Morris Ankrum (born Morris Nussbaum; August 28, 1897 – September 2, 1964) was an American radio, television, and film character actor. Early life Born in Danville in Vermilion County in eastern Illinois, Ankrum originally began a career in academics. After graduating from The University of Southern California with a law degree, he went on to an associate professorship in economics at the University of California, Berkeley.
