Tenmile River (Metro-North Station)
Tenmile River station (formerly State School station) is a commuter rail stop on the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line, located in Amenia, New York. The station is located on Sinpatch Road (Dutchess CR 5), next to the crossing of the creek, a short distance east of NY 22/ 343. Tenmile River is named for the waterway of the same name adjacent to the station as well as north of the grade crossing with Sinpatch Road, and is in nearly the same spot as the State School station (named for a nearby institution for the developmentally disabled, now Taconic Developmental Center) which was closed with Penn Central's abandonment of passenger service north of Dover Plains in 1972. Wassaic, New York
Wassaic is a hamlet (place), hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Amenia (town), New York, Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, United States. Located in southeastern New York in the valley of the Ten Mile River (Housatonic River tributary), Ten Mile River, Wassaic is bordered to the east and west by mountain ranges. The name of the hamlet is derived from the Native American word ''Washaic''; "land of difficult access" or "narrow valley". However, Europeans found ready access by following the Housatonic River valley up from Long Island Sound and through the mountains along the Ten Mile River. One of the earliest recorded Europeans to settle in Wassaic was Richard Sackett. He petitioned the Colonial Government on March 11, 1703 for a license to purchase a tract of land in "Washiack". Amenia is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 4,436 at the 2010 census. The town is on the eastern border of the county. History Amenia is one of the original towns formed by act of March 7, 1788. It comprises the width of the Oblong Tract, and the east tier of lots in the Great Nine Partners Patent. Inhabitants prior to European incursion were Pequot, in a village on the west side of a pond they called Wequagnoch. Along with related Native Americans from Connecticut, they held pow wows on land both before and after the incorporation of the town. In 1703 Richard Sackett was granted a patent for land along Wassaic Creek. As this land was already included in the previous Great Nine Partners Patent, Sackett's title was invalid. The Penn Central Transportation Company, commonly abbreviated to Penn Central, was an American class I railroad that operated from 1968 to 1976. The Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line, originally chartered as the New York and Harlem Railroad, is an commuter rail line running north from New York City to Wassaic, in eastern Dutchess County. The lower from Grand Central Terminal to Southeast, in Putnam County, is electrified with a third rail and has at least two tracks. The section north of Southeast is a non-electrified single-track line served by diesel locomotives. The diesel trains usually run as a shuttle on the northern end of the line, except for rush-hour express trains in the peak direction (four to Grand Central in the morning, four from Grand Central in the evening) and one train in each direction on weekends.
