This is a timeline of the world's largest passenger ships based upon internal volume, initially measured by gross register tonnage and later by gross tonnage. This timeline reflects the largest extant passenger ship in the world at any given time. If a given ship was superseded by another, scrapped, or lost at sea, it is then succeeded. Some records for tonnage outlived the ships that set them - notably the SS Great Eastern, SS ''Great Eastern'', and RMS Queen Elizabeth, RMS ''Queen Elizabeth''. The term "largest passenger ship" has evolved over time to also include List of longest ships, ships by length as supertankers built by the 1970s were over long. In the modern era the term has gradually fallen out of use in favor of "List of largest cruise ships, largest cruise ship" as the industry has shifted to cruising rather than transatlantic ocean travel. Adriatic (1856 Ship)
''Adriatic'' was a wooden-hulled, Paddle steamer, side-wheel steamship launched in New York in 1856. She was conceived as the largest, fastest, most luxurious trans-Atlantic passenger liner of her day, the pride of the Collins Line. At the time of her launch she was the largest ship in the world. She made only one roundtrip for the Collins Line before that firm failed, partly because of ''Adriatic's'' high cost. She made five more roundtrips as a luxury liner, before she was sold to an English firm which reconfigured her to carry hundreds of Irish immigrants to America. In all, the ship made only twelve trans-Atlantic roundtrips, so while she may have been a triumph of American shipbuilding, none of her owners were successful. She ended her days as a Hulk (ship type), hulk at the mouth of the Niger River as a floating coal depot to fuel ships better adapted to the commercial realities of the day. Sinking Of The RMS Lusitania
was a British-registered ocean liner that was torpedoed by an Imperial German Navy U-boat during the First World War on 7 May 1915, about off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland. The attack took place in the declared maritime war-zone around the UK, three months after unrestricted submarine warfare against the ships of the United Kingdom had been announced by Germany following the Allied powers' implementation of a Blockade of Germany (1914–1919), naval blockade against it and the other Central Powers. The passengers had been notified before departing New York City, New York of the general danger of voyaging into the area in a British ship, but the attack itself came without warning. From a submerged position to starboard, commanded by ''Kapitänleutnant'' Walther Schwieger launched a single torpedo at the Cunard liner. SS Kaiserin Auguste Victoria
RMS ''Empress of Scotland'', originally SS ''Kaiserin Auguste Victoria'', was an ocean liner built in 1905–1906 by Vulcan AG shipyard in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) for the Hamburg America Line. The ship regularly sailed between Hamburg and New York City until the outbreak of war in Europe in 1914. At the end of hostilities, re-flagged as USS ''Kaiserin Auguste Victoria'', she transported American troops from Europe to the United States. For a brief time Cunard sailed the re-flagged ship between Liverpool and New York. The ship was refitted for Canadian Pacific Steamships (CP) and in 1921, she was renamed ''Empress of Scotland''—the first of two CP ships to bear that name. The vessel ended service in 1930 and was sold for scrap. During the demolition of the ship, the vessel caught fire, broke in two and sank. The hulls were raised and scrapped.
