The Hot And Copper Sky
''The Hot and Copper Sky'' is a 1962 British radio play by Bruce Stewart about the bushranger Ben Hall, originally written for BBC radio. Stewart adapted it into a TV play ''The Night of Ben Hall'' which the BBC optioned for two years but did not use. Stewart used the same title for an unrelated 1982 novel. The play was recorded for Australian radio in 1963. Premise Ben Hall and two fellow-bushrangers, Dunn and Jack Gilbert, arrive at the small township of Canowindra. Bruce Stewart (scriptwriter)
Bruce Robert Stewart (4 September 1925 – ) was an actor and scriptwriter best known for his scripts for television. Originally from New Zealand, he lived for several years in Australia, working in the theatre, before moving to the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. There he worked on many projects for both the BBC and ITV, notably '' Out of the Unknown'' and ''Timeslip''. Biography Stewart was born in Auckland and studied at Mount Albert Grammar. For three years he studied to be a priest at Marist seminary. He then moved into the entertainment industry. Stewart served in the army. He would perform songs and tell stories as a forces entertaininer, then moved into radio in Auckland, where he worked as a radio announcer and actor. Ben Hall (bushranger)
Ben Hall (9 May 1837 – 5 May 1865) was an Australian bushranger and leading member of the Gardiner–Hall gang. He and his associates carried out many raids across New South Wales, from Bathurst, New South Wales, Bathurst to Forbes, New South Wales, Forbes, south to Gundagai and east to Goulburn, New South Wales, Goulburn. Unlike many bushrangers of the era, Hall was not directly responsible for any deaths, although several of his associates were. He was shot dead by police in May 1865 at Goobang Creek. The police claimed that they were acting under the protection of the ''Felons Apprehension Act 1865,'' which allowed any bushranger who had been specifically named under the terms of the Act to be shot, and killed by any person at any time without warning.
