The Go-Go's
The Go-Go's are an American all-female Rock music, rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1978. Except for short periods when other musicians joined briefly, the band has had a relatively stable lineup consisting of Charlotte Caffey on lead guitar and keyboard instrument, keyboards, Belinda Carlisle on lead vocals, Gina Schock on drums, Kathy Valentine on bass guitar, bass, and Jane Wiedlin on rhythm guitar. The quintet emerged from the L.A. punk rock scene of the late 1970s and in 1981 released their debut album ''Beauty and the Beat (The Go-Go's album), Beauty and the Beat''. A first for an all-female band writing their material and playing their instruments, the LP topped the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Billboard 200, album chart and remains an achievement yet to be matched. ''Vacation'' is the second studio album by American rock band the Go-Go's, released on July 20, 1982, by I.R.S. Records. The album reached number eight on the ''Billboard'' 200, and has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The title track reached number eight on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Despite the album's success, the recording period was hampered by several issues. Most of the band's lineup was struggling with drug addiction and were starting to argue more over creative differences. There was also growing discord between songwriter and lead guitarist Charlotte Caffey, lead singer Belinda Carlisle, and guitarist Jane Wiedlin, who had begun to take more of an interest in songwriting. Best New Artist
The Grammy Award for Best New Artist has been awarded since the 2nd Annual Grammy Awards in 1960 (except in 1967) "for a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." Since 2022, the award is presented by the previous year's winner during the televised ceremony. The Best New Artist award has a reputation for being given to artists whose music industry success ends up being short-lived; it is sometimes asserted, with varying degrees of sincerity, that the award itself brings a curse. "We Got the Beat" is a song by the American all-female rock band the Go-Go's, written by the group's lead guitarist and keyboardist Charlotte Caffey. The band first recorded the song in early 1980 as a single on UK-based Stiff Records, and rerecorded it the next year for their debut album '' Beauty and the Beat'' on I.R.S. Records. "We Got the Beat" is considered a new wave classic and the Go-Go's' signature song. The song was named one of "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll". The first version of the song was released as a single on May 9, 1980, in the UK, but it was criticized for being artificially sped up. Our Lips Are Sealed
"Our Lips Are Sealed" is a song co-written by Jane Wiedlin, guitarist of the Go-Go's, and Terry Hall, singer of the Specials and Fun Boy Three. It was first recorded by the Go-Go's as the opening track on their album '' Beauty and the Beat'' (1981) and was their debut American single in June 1981. The single eventually reached the top 5 in Australia and Canada, and the top 20 in the United States. Originally written and performed with three verses,See video "Totally Go-Go's" recorded live on December 4, 1981, at Palos Verdes High School the song appears in an abbreviated version on ''Beauty and the Beat''.
