Tarawera River
The Tarawera River is in the Bay of Plenty Region in the North Island of New Zealand. It flows from Lake Tarawera, northeastwards across the northern flanks of the active volcano Mount Tarawera, and past the town of Kawerau before turning north, reaching the Bay of Plenty west of Edgecumbe. The Tarawera Falls on the river are considered to be quite spectacular. Environmental issues The Tasman Mill, Tasman Pulp and Paper Mill, now owned by Norske Skog, has been discharging waste into the river since 1955. Local residents have erected signposts labelling the river as the "Black Drain" since the 1990s. The dark colour is due to the presence of water pollution in New Zealand, pollution from farms, sewage and stormwater but it is predominantly from pulp and paper mill effluent. The Bay of Plenty () is a large bight (geography), bight along the northern coast of New Zealand's North Island. It stretches from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to Cape Runaway in the east. Ōkataina Caldera (Ōkataina Volcanic Centre, also spelled Okataina) is a volcano, volcanic caldera and its associated volcanoes located in Taupō Volcanic Zone of New Zealand's North Island. It has several actual or postulated sub calderas. Matatā
Matatā is a town in the Bay of Plenty in the North Island of New Zealand, to the north-west of Whakatāne. Much of the town was relocated between the years 2006 and 2021 due to increased natural threats arising from climate change. As an example of forced retreat, Matatā is seen as providing lessons for future actions elsewhere.
